Letting all my customers know…I tested positive for covid on Sunday and will not be making the Parks Legado Christmas Tree market on Saturday the 20th.

After 18 years of love (and the occasional bite), Mr. Nutmeg has left the building.

For those who may not have seen the previous posts, he’s been fighting an aggressive cancer since at least the beginning of May that has been filling his abdomen…making it difficult to breathe. He’s been on chemotherapy medication for the last two weeks (his next dose was Monday night), but he didn’t respond to the hormone therapy or the chemo.

Work has been very understanding…and he’s been getting spoiled daily with head scratches and all his favorite stuff. He’s been up & down this last week, so I spent a couple of days working from home…which only made me realize how little I could do for him right now. Both the vet & I don’t think he was in any pain through all this…just struggling to breathe and maybe a little uncomfortable.

I’m going to miss my cranky, set-in-his-ways little buddy (and he’s been like that since he was 3!). 18 years is quite a long life for a cockatiel (12-15 average)…and I know it’s been a good one with lots of love and spoiling.

I I have good news and bad news…

Good news is I found a job to keep me in Midland and started this week! I will still be able to do Farmers Markets like Midland Downtown Farmers Market on the weekends!

Bad news…

The cute little guy in the photo is Nutmeg, my 18 year old cockatiel…he’s essentially a senior in cockatiel years. This past week he began having respiratory problems and I rushed him up to DFW to see his avian vet on Friday. 5 different traffic accidents between here and there meant I missed the appointment and had to take him in on Saturday morning instead. His breathing was so bad he was panting open-beak and they had to put him in an oxygen box. He was too weak to do any real diagnostic work, so he got antibiotics and anti-inflammatory/pain medication…but they closed for the day at lunch and couldn’t keep him in the oxygen after closing. We rushed him to the Animal ER in Southlake, where he was put back into oxygen for another 7 hours. We got a call later suggesting we should come back and say goodbye to him as he wasn’t improving. We spent 3 more hours with him…over that time he perked up and wanted food & water, so we decided to bring him home with his medication and look after him. He’s still very weak, breathing poorly, and may not make it…and we still really don’t know what’s wrong. But he’s fighting and he’s with us.

Additionally, my mum has been in the hospital for the last three weeks with one complication after another following a routine surgery to replace a temporary stent in her bile duct with a permanent one that resulted in an infection. She is doing much better and will hopefully transfer from the hospital to a rehabilitation facility later this week.

With all this going on (and a new job to boot), I will be taking a break from the markets for the next few weekends to spend time with my mum in Dallas and try to get Nutmeg stabilized. Everything will still be on the website and I will do my best to ship as rapidly as possible, but I won’t be spending time restocking or selling in person for a bit.

Please keep both Nutmeg and my mum in your thoughts and hope for a speedy recovery for them both.
