Celebrating Delilah Beasley, A Pioneer in Massage Therapy

"She has in some quarters been called the first African American massage therapist. While this may or may not be accurate, it’s fair to say Delilah Beasley is among the earliest and most prominent examples of African American massage practitioners.

Like many massage therapists today, Delilah tried her practice in a variety of settings, ranging from high-society spas to private clients. At one point she lived in New York, where she worked at the Buffalo Sanitarium, specializing in providing head and scalp massages to pregnant women. Later, she became the head massage therapist at a Michigan resort."

Let’s say I start our massage with you face down and I work on your back for like 20 minutes until your deeply relaxed…in that case, I can end the session with you face up and elevate the portion of the table that makes you sit up a bit. What are some good reasons to do this at the end of the hour long session? Elevating the head portion of the massage table slightly at the end of a session can provide several benefits for the client: 🌱Easier transition ~ Preventing dizziness or lightheadedness, especially after a deep or relaxing massage. 🌱 Improved Circulation ~ Elevating the head can reduce the likelihood of a sudden drop in blood pressure that may occur when standing up quickly. 🌱 Relaxing Breath ~ Respiratory issues, sinus congestion, or discomfort lying flat may feel a relief when head is slightly elevated. 🌱 Comfort for Sensitive Clients ~ For clients with back pain, postural issues, or abdominal discomfort, this position can provide added support during the massage at the end. 🌱 Gentle Re-Awakening ~ Sitting up slightly brings you out of the deep relaxation state more gradually, helping you feel more alert and balanced before you leave. 🌱 Better Communication ~ Ending in an elevated position can make it easier to check in with you about your experience or offer aftercare advice while maintaining your comfort. • • • #kzoomassage #travelingmassage #portagespa #portagemi #portagemichigan #portagemisalon
