I started volunteering at Bedford Hills Correctional Facility because I wanted to do something — even something small — that could make life a little better for women who are so often forgotten once they enter the system.
The more time I spend there and the more stories I hear, the more complicated the picture becomes.
A New York study of women incarcerated at Bedford Hills found that 94% had experienced physical and/or sexual violence in their lifetime. 82% had experienced severe abuse as children. 75% had experienced serious physical violence by an intimate partner. Research more broadly estimates that 70–80% of incarcerated women are survivors of intimate-partner violence. THESE NUMBERS are staggering!!
This isn’t about pretending actions don’t have consequences or ignoring the people who have been harmed. Both can be true. Accountability matters — and so does understanding the trauma, abuse, poverty, addiction, motherhood and lack of resources that can exist long before a woman ever enters a prison.
And there are incredible organizations doing work inside Bedford Hills to make a real difference:
Hour Children operates the residential nursery, where eligible mothers can live with their babies for up to 18 months, and provides parenting support, children’s visiting programs, transportation and resources that help preserve the bond between mothers and their children hour_children
Women’s Prison Association (WPA) provides preventive health services, counseling and release planning to help women prepare for life after incarceration.
Puppies Behind Bars began its first program at Bedford Hills in 1997 and gives incarcerated participants the responsibility of raising and training service dogs. This program is AMAZING and so loved by the women.
Women & Justice Project currently runs Expressive Arts and Write to Heal programming at Bedford Hills, creating spaces for women to process trauma and use writing and art for reflection, connectionand growth.

Before the “I do,” there’s a morning full of “remember when…” 🤍
From the getting-ready moments to the final makeup touches, this bridal party brought the best energy. We always love hearing how each girl met the bride. Every friendship has a story, and getting to hear those stories while everyone’s in the makeup chair is one of our favorite parts of the day.
This group was such a joy to work with, we had to share a little more from Abby’s NYC wedding at Guastavino’s. Soft glam, so much laughter, and a room full of girls celebrating their bride. ✨

Before there was ESSIE COHEN MAKEUP, there was MAC.
Looking through these photos feels like looking through a completely different lifetime.
Fashion Week backstage. Halloween transformations. Events. Brides. Long days, crazy looks, incredible artists, and a LOT of makeup.
MAC was where I learned so much more than how to apply makeup. It taught me how to work on every kind of face, how to think on my feet, how to work under pressure, how to connect with the person sitting in my chair — and how to keep evolving creatively.
And somewhere along the way, I started becoming my own kind of artist.
My style changed. My kit changed. The industry changed. I changed.
I went from working behind a counter and backstage to building a bridal and beauty business, leading a team, educating other artists, and creating a career that looks very different from where I started.
But so much of what I learned in those MAC years still shows up in the way I work today.
20+ years later, I’m still evolving. And I think that might be my favorite part of being an artist.
