Modern Pioneering with Georgia Pellegrini | Yaupon | Season 3 Georgia explores yaupon--its ecology, history, and revival as a native American tea.

Catawba Yaupon is crafted from plant to package by a Catawba mother and daughter, honoring generations of indigenous knowledge. It's not just about a great cup of tea — it's about restoring a treasured native plant to its rightful place, and helping preserve traditions that have sustained native communities for generations. When you choose yaupon, you're part of that story.

Most people know yerba mate, the caffeinated leaf that's been part of South American life for generations. Fewer people know North America has its own version: yaupon. It's the only caffeine-producing plant native to this continent, and for generations it played a similar role for many indigenous peoples across the Southeast, from social gatherings to ceremonies.

Yerba mate and yaupon are actually cousins in the holly family, separated by thousands of miles but connected by a similar story: a native plant, brewed hot and shared communally. Different continents, same idea.

Did you know that producing a single cup of coffee requires an astonishing 35 gallons of water?

From irrigation to processing, the environmental footprint adds up quickly. In contrast, thoughtfully crafted Yaupon tea is naturally abundant in our native southeastern woodlands, thriving on rainfall alone with zero intensive irrigation.

Choosing Yaupon isn't just an upgrade for your cup—it's a conscious choice for water conservation. Sip smarter and protect our planet's most precious resource.
