Happy Birthday Nicole!

She was born in Honolulu. By the age of six, she was 4,000 miles gone.
That little girl turns 48 today. And almost nobody remembers she is one of us.

Her name is Nicole Prascovia Elikolani Valiente. Her mother is Native Hawaiian. Her middle name, Elikolani, is her mother's name, so she carried Hawaii in her own name all the way to a small town in Kentucky.

There was not much money. By her teens she was waitressing and modeling to help her parents pay the bills.

Then the world heard her voice. She became the lead singer of the Pussycat Dolls, 55 million records sold, the BIGGEST girl group on the planet. "Don't Cha" played in every club on Earth.

She was on top of the world. And she was quietly disappearing.

For eight years, at the absolute peak, she was secretly fighting bulimia. She hid it so well that NOBODY in the group or her own family knew. "I had such a great life on the outside," she said. "The Dolls were on top of the world, but I was miserable on the inside."

Her manager found her passed out on the floor. That was the moment she heard herself think one thing: "I'm going to lose everything I love if I don't love myself."

She fought her way back. But the world kept looking straight past her. "People have been dismissing me and discarding me, or overlooking me," she said, her whole life.

The most famous girl ever born in Honolulu had everything the world could hand her, and still felt like she belonged NOWHERE.

Then Hawaii called.

In August 2019, Native Hawaiians stood on Mauna Kea to protect ground they hold sacred. A global pop star could have stayed silent in Los Angeles. Instead, Nicole flew home and went up the mountain to stand with the kūpuna. "I went to Mauna Kea to stand in solidarity with my people," she wrote.

She sang for the elders holding the line. "Admire isn't even the word," she said. "To know that they would stay there forever - that they would die for our Aina."

The girl they took from Hawaii at six had come back to give Hawaii her voice.

Every island family has the one who had to leave. The cousin on the mainland who goes quiet at the airport, then lights up the second their bare feet touch the islands again.

Then came the role nobody would hand her. She played Norma Desmond in "Sunset Boulevard," and London crowned her with its Olivier Award. Then, on June 8, 2025, New York gave her the Tony for Best Actress in a Musical.

She stood on that stage shaking, 46 years old, and told the world the truest thing she had ever said.

"Growing up, I always felt like I didn't belong. But you all have made me feel like I belong. And I have come home, at last."

Last summer, she flew back to Hawaii again. More than 200 of her ʻohana, one family reunion, the girl from Honolulu standing in the middle of all of them.

She came home on a Broadway stage in New York. She came home on a sacred mountain on the Big Island. She came home to 200 cousins at a family reunion.

Some people are simply from a place. Nicole had to spend forty years fighting her way back to one.
