🚨 **NEW TUTORIAL DROP MONDAY 7am!** Link in bio. 🎥

One of the biggest challenges for new barbers isn’t making the first cut—it’s knowing **where to start**.

In this tutorial, I show you how to use the **areas of the head**, **receding lines**, and simple **facial reference points** to confidently establish your first guide.

When you know where to start, everything else becomes easier. You’ll save time, build confidence, and create a haircut that’s easier to control from start to finish.

Stop guessing where the guide should go.

Learn the principle, then apply it to every client you see.

Most barbers learn a **0° haircut** as a beginner’s exercise.

I see it differently.

A solid 0° foundation gives you the freedom to experiment. Once you understand where your guides come from, how the different areas of the head connect, and how changing your cutting angle or elevation affects shape, you’re no longer just following a haircut—you’re learning how to design one.

The best part? You can practice all of these concepts on a mannequin without worrying about messing up a client’s haircut.

Master the foundation. The creativity comes later.

One of the greatest gifts barbering has given me has nothing to do with hair.

I started cutting Landon Landen Peak and Matt’s Matt Atchley hair when they were in middle school. Now they’re halfway through college, and somewhere along the way they became more than clients—they became family friends.

It’s easy to think this profession is just about giving a good haircut, but the real value is in the conversations, the trust that’s built over years, and getting to watch people grow through different seasons of life.

Haircuts come and go.

Relationships are what keep me excited to come to work every day.

Grateful for these guys and for everyone who’s trusted me with a chair over the years. 💈

The transition area is where a lot of haircuts are won or lost.

In this breakdown, I’m using my 6.25” Double Shark Fin to work one section at a time, bringing each section down to the guide with the comb while controlling elevation and keeping the guide visible the entire time.

The goal isn’t to move faster—it’s to build control, consistency, and confidence.

One of the biggest reasons haircuts take too long is because barbers never clearly identify where the sides end and the top begins.

Every client has a side and a top—but the transition area is unique to their head shape.

By learning to identify the parietal ridge first, you create a roadmap for the haircut before making your first cut. It simplifies the process, improves consistency, and helps you build cleaner haircuts with confidence.

This reel is just a quick tip. For the full breakdown, **click the link in my bio** to watch the complete tutorial.

**Diagonal Back Graduation** is one of the simplest ways to support hair that naturally flows back.

By over-directing the section diagonally back, you’re not just cutting hair—you’re creating direction and moving weight to support the finished style.

In this quick breakdown, I cover:
✂️ Proper hand position
✂️ How to execute it
✂️ When to use it
✂️ Why it works

Understanding the *why* behind the technique is what helps you become more intentional behind the chair.

Most barbers learn *how* to perform a technique.

My goal is to help you understand *why* you’re using it.

Graduation isn’t just a cutting pattern—it’s a design tool. Every section you pick up is a decision that affects the weight, direction, and movement of the haircut.

In this week’s Shark Fin tutorial, we break down the three primary types of graduation used in men’s cutting:

▪️ **Block** – Build weight
▪️ **Cross** – Move weight
▪️ **Vertical** – Control weight

We’ll cover proper hand positioning, how to execute each pattern, and more importantly, when and why to use them behind the chair.

The better you understand the principles, the less you’ll rely on memorizing haircuts. Instead, you’ll begin designing them with intention.
