Absolutely!

I have never liked the idea that we must love ourselves before anyone else can love us. It’s one of those statements that sounds wise at first, until you sit with it for a moment and realize how absurdly it flattens the human experience.

As if grief, depression, trauma, shame, confusion—any of the very real states people move through—are simply personal failures to be corrected before we are allowed care.

People deserve love while they are in the middle of it. Not after they’ve “fixed” themselves. Not after they’ve reached some imaginary threshold of self-approval. Sometimes being loved well is part of how we learn that love can even be safe.

Self-love matters, yes—but it should never be turned into a gate people have to unlock before they are considered worthy of kindness.

My “Olive” is done. My amazing olive green Ford Escape’s transmission just failed. Her 4 wheels are wobbly. I love this French car made in Canada from the manufacturers sticker on the inside and her translations on the dashboard. She was really good to us. Hardly ever gave us any issues except for the last few years here and there. It’s not like going to trade in, I don’t get another ride with her. She took us everywhere.
