Know the value you bring and price accordingly

I remember when I was getting started with my makeup business I used to work for Macys. I started booking my first paying clients and about 4-5 months later I simply did the math.

I was able to work less time by servicing clients then working hourly for Macys, and was able to have more time to actually work on my business.

But not only that, I was able to actually do something I truly loved, and I didn’t need to go to a job and clock in anymore.

This is what made me quit Macys in 2016 and never go back to a regular job since.

Now when I get those messages from my students, and they tell me they want to quit their jobs because it doesn’t serve them anymore, I completely understand.

This is why I am launching something truly exciting for all women that are wanting to start doing makeup and getting paid for it but they are afraid to quit their jobs (and they shouldn’t right away).

And it will be exactly what these women need to start learning how to apply makeup professionally without going all in yet on makeup until they are ready for that step.

Consistency is everything

Hyaluronic acid is amazing for your skin but there’s one thing you need to know before layering it under your makeup.

HA helps hydrate and plump the skin, giving it that fresh, youthful look. But because many hyaluronic acid serums are water-based, they may not always work well underneath makeup products that are more wax- or silicone-based.

It’s not about avoiding hyaluronic acid. It’s about understanding what you’re layering on your skin and how those formulas interact.

The right skincare + makeup combination can make a HUGE difference in how your makeup sits.

You don’t need to know everyone to build a successful beauty career. You just need to start putting yourself out there.

Create content. Network. Go to events. Collaborate. Reach out.

When I moved to Vegas in 2013, I didn’t know anyone. By 2015, I had started building my portfolio and my business from scratch.

And here’s what I learned: people don’t just remember you for how good your makeup is. They remember that you’re reliable, on time, professional, and someone they can trust.

Once people know who you are and what you bring to the table, opportunities start finding you.

So if you’re waiting until you “know more people” to get started don’t.

Put yourself out there. Let people see you. Build relationships. And let your work speak for itself.

One of the first things I’ve learned as a pro makeup artist: it’s not just about which products you use, but how those products work together.

I personally don’t use a lot of water-based products in my professional kit, and there’s a reason for that.

When you combine products with different formulations that aren’t compatible, they may initially seem like they’re mixing perfectly. But once you apply them to the skin and give them a little time, they can start to separate.
And when your base starts separating, you can end up with:

• Patchiness.
• Uneven texture.
• Foundation breaking apart.
• A base that doesn’t look smooth or seamless.

This is why understanding product formulation and compatibility is so important, especially if you’re building a professional makeup kit.

It’s not about saying “water-based = bad.” It’s about knowing what works with what and choosing products that layer well together.
