Are we the only species that doesn't know how to coexist?
The other day, I was driving back to Springfield after dropping off a client through the rich, joyful, and peaceful woods of Western Massachusetts, and opened my phone camera. Moreover, after seen that beautiful black bear on Tom's post, I realized that we, as a privileged community with such a diverse population and natural resources, need to pay more attention and care of all our neighbors.
Looking at the trees and the wildlife, I couldn’t help but stop and wonder: What are they thinking? When you watch non-human animals, they seem to inherently understand life. They play, they interact, and they respect boundaries.
They don't dump waste, pollute their own water, or destroy their own homes just for comfort. They take only what they need to survive, leaving the rest to the natural cycle of life. There is an unwritten, perfect harmony there.
They communicate in ways that put our technology to shame. They don't need text messages to meet up at a specific location.
Think about the so-hated raccoons. People call them pests, but when a mother raccoon bares her teeth, uses her sharp claws, and stands her ground against a threat, she isn't being aggressive—she is fiercely protecting her babies from a world we made hostile for them.
Yet, day after day, the most devastating threat they face comes from humans.
I know. It's not concomfortable to see mess, or feel that strong odor attacking our noses or avoiding to see red evidence of the victim still on the pavement. No need of an ambulance nor need to treat injuries nor need to investigate.
From speeding through their habitats to illegal poaching and legal deforestation, we break the rules of coexistence every single day. We cross their boundaries constantly, yet we expect them to magically dodge our vehicles and survive our expansion. It’s ironic. We call ourselves the most "intelligent" species on Earth, but we struggle with the basic civic sense and environmental discipline that animals, plants, water, air and wind practice naturally. They were here first.
Next time you drive past our beautiful New England woods, take a second to look out the window.
Let's start respecting the boundaries of all the planet's inhabitants. The Earth doesn't belong to us. We belong to it. 🦌🌎
