5 Benefits of Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy in Pregnancy:
✨Ease and relieve back, hip, and pelvic pain. There are a lot of changes happening in your body during pregnancy including hormone changes, a growing uterus, and physical changes to accommodate a growing belly which ultimately lead to changes in center of gravity and strain on your spine, pelvis, and hips. Aches and pain can happen, but you don’t have to live with them!
✨ Core and pelvic floor health. Learn how to manage, minimize, or avoid issues of urinary leakage, pelvic heaviness, and excessive abdominal separation.
✨ Guidance of appropriate movement and and safe exercise. We want you to continue moving, but there are times that movement and exercises may need to be modified to protect your changing body. We can make sure you feel confident and safe with movement throughout your pregnancy.
✨ Smoother labor and delivery. Learn how different stretches and positions can open the pelvic inlet and pelvic outlet. We can instruct you on perineal stretching, different labor positions, and breathing techniques to improve labor and delivery. We can perform gentle and safe manual therapy techniques to improve tissue mobility and prepare the body for a smoother delivery. We can also help you prepare and know what to expect with a c-section delivery.
✨ Postpartum recovery. Whether you have delivered vaginally or by cesarean, postpartum recovery is so important! Learn what you can begin to implement day 1 to help with recovery, as well as, symptoms of dysfunction to be on the lookout for. Your body just went through a lot with pregnancy and labor/delivery - now it’s time to allow it to heal and recover safely.
Let our specialized pelvic floor physical therapists help you through your pregnancy journey!
Thank you 💕
We truly strive to offer a safe and welcoming space for our patients. By providing hour-long appointments we are able to give our patients the time they deserve to share. Our space doesn’t feel medical or clinical, instead it feels calm and welcoming, specific to pelvic floor physical therapy, where our patients feel invited to share their stories in their own time. We are here for you and we want you to feel empowered with the knowledge we share with you so you can fully understand what is going on with your body, teach you different ways to find relief of your pain and/or symptoms, and ultimately help you reach your goals.
A recent study by Pfaus, et al, published this year in the Journal of Sexual Medicine revealed women experience three different types of or**sm. Let me tell you guys, did not disappoint with her lecture on the female or**sm at !
The researchers categorized the types of or**sm by the primary rhythm of the contractions of the pelvic floor during the big "O". The three types defined were: wave, volcano, and avalanche.
🌊Wave is described as a series of repetitive, synchronized contractions of the pelvic floor that ultimately leads to a brief surge of pelvic floor contractions during climax.
🌋Volcano is characterized by a gradual building of upward pelvic floor contraction that eventually leads to an explosive climax that feels like pressure is being released all at once.
🏔Avalanche is defined as an even contraction of the pelvic floor muscles that dramatically increases at climax resulting in the sensation of the pelvic floor traveling downward as it tightens.
So why do we share this information? Because among many other things, pelvic floor dysfunction can lead to difficulty achieving or**sm! In addition, many of our patients have shared that they have never experienced or**sm. Pelvic floor PT can be a very important piece of the puzzle by helping our patients better understand their physical anatomy and ensuring the muscles are functioning optimally.
In addition to the physical aspect, or**sm is also a very mental and emotional experience, which we can help patients navigate with referrals to mental health therapists or s*x therapists.
Do you have questions about or**sm or do you just want to understand your own anatomy better? DM us for further info or call to schedule a visit. Another great place to start is with some of our favorite books on the subject: Come As You Are by Emily Nagoski, PhD, The Va**na Bible by Dr. Jen Gunter, Heal Pelvic Pain by Amy Stein, Becoming Cliterate by Laurie Mintz, PhD.
We are so excited to have Sara Campbell as a referral source for our patients. Check out Riverbanks Counseling!

“After 5 vaginal deliveries and 1 c-section, I needed help with various issues. It is such a disservice to women that so few know about our options for healing and recovery after childbirth. I wish more primary care doctors and OBGYNs would promote physical therapy for pelvic floor issues. Although I have tried physical therapy for pelvic floor dysfunction in the past, I have never had the kind of success I have had with Jami at Empower Physical Therapy! A year ago, my OBGYN said that I was a surgical candidate and recommend that I pursue corrective surgery as soon as I wanted to. After going to PT with Jami for a few months, my OBGYN says that I can put off surgery for another 5-10 years! Jami has helped me to drastically improve my diastasis recti (abdominal muscle separation), vaginal and bladder prolapse, and rectocele. I am even getting back into running after taking 5 years off due to birthing injuries. I feel so much stronger and in touch with my body. Jami is not only friendly and funny (which are amazing traits for a physical therapist in this particular area!), but she truly knows her stuff. She sends me home with exercises that work for my lifestyle with 6 young kids, and I can see marked differences every time I see her. Jami is an excellent listener, takes the time to answer my questions, addresses all of my concerns thoroughly (and in language that makes sense to me!), and makes sure I'm confident with the new exercises before I leave. The clinic is beautiful and clean, and Jami always checks to make sure that my modesty is protected and that I'm comfortable. Even if I end up having to have corrective surgery down the road, I am thrilled to get to enjoy and be active in the body I have right now. Many thanks to Jami for all of her help with my physical therapy! I can't recommend you highly enough!”
Mark your calendars! We are excited to offer FREE diastasis recti screenings from August 22 - August 31, 2022 at Empower Physical Therapy!
We often hear our patients voice concerns and fears over a diastasis recti and whether or not they have one. There is a lot of information on the internet and social media which can lead to confusion. In an effort to combat this confusion, we are offering a free screening by a specialized pelvic floor physical therapist.
Call us, email us or message us to sign up for a free 15-minute screen today!
Did you know?? 🧐🤔
Pelvic Floor Dysfunction can contribute to hip pain, low back pain, SI joint pain, abdominal pain and discomfort, and tailbone pain.
If you have been experiencing pain in any of these areas, and have been unable to find relief, your pelvic floor may be the driver of your pain. Examining the pelvic floor will give you a full picture of what is behind your pain and can be the key to unlocking lasting relief.
Have further questions about how the pelvic floor could be contributing to your pain? Feel free to DM us, email [email protected], or call our office at 402-413-0622 to schedule an appointment.

Meet owner and Physical Therapist, .stefanie.urbom.pt
After I graduated into the wonderful world of motherhood, I became increasingly frustrated with the unsolicited and often harmful information I was given regarding my body, my healing process, and the importance of rehabilitating my core and pelvic floor after each pregnancy. As a practicing physical therapist and self-proclaimed nerd, I needed to know what I could do to help my body. Empowered with the knowledge that society's “norms”, no matter how common, do not have to be our new normal. It became my mission to dispel the all-too-common myths and empower my patients with the knowledge and skills to take control of their bodies.
I began taking continuing education classes to further my hands-on skill set. I also read as much as I could find on the pelvic floor, the core, pregnancy, childbirth, breast-feeding, pelvic pain, and pain with in*******se. As my pelvic floor therapy practice grew, what I also began to notice was that allowing my patients to share each of their unique stories, in their own words and in their own time, had just as much impact on their healing as being armed with the medical knowledge to take control of their bodies.
The greatest gift I have been given as a clinician is my ability to deeply connect with my patients. It is also the part of my practice that brings me the greatest joy. I want every patient to have a safe space to tell their story - sometimes that means speaking hard truths. I welcome every patient with open arms. I believe firmly that each and every one of us has the capacity to begin our own healing journey. Whenever someone is ready to take that first step, I am here to help you navigate the murky waters of misinformation and half-truths that we have been told about our bodies.
Meet owner and Physical Therapist,
I began my career in outpatient orthopedic physical therapy in 2012 after graduating from the University of Nebraska Medical Center with my Doctorate in Physical Therapy. I have always loved helping patients relieve their pain and achieve their goals. There were a few patients though that something was missing and I found that the missing piece was addressing their pelvic floor dysfunction.
I dove head first into continuing education courses and learning more about pelvic floor disorders and dysfunction and haven’t looked back since. It has truly become my passion. I am passionate about empowering my patients by teaching them about the bodies they live in. Every week, a patient will tell me “why has nobody ever told me this” or “I wish someone told me...” Knowledge is power and I want all my patients to have the keys and feel empowered to care for their bodies throughout their lifetime.
I combine my orthopedic and pelvic health skills to take a whole body approach when treating patients. I focus on patient education along with manual techniques and individualized exercise programs to help patients achieve their goals.
I am happily married to my husband, Kevin, and together we have a son, Jack, and a golden retriever, Buddy. My time outside the clinic is spent with family and friends, exercising and traveling when we have the chance.
