The goal of Vintage Hairstyling is to provide you with the most helpful tutorials, tools, and products to achieve gorgeous retro hair and makeup yourself!
I am a hair and makeup artist with a passion for beauty of the past. I create both historical re-enactment hair and makeup and contemporary interpretations of time periods gone by. My obsession began while I was majoring in photography at Northern Arizona University and it grew so strong after graduation that I went back to cosmetology school to master finger waves, pin curls, and anything else I could. I now freelance providing unique hair and makeup design for advertising, film, and special event clients. I also provide more information on historical beauty through events and classes and on the Bobby Pin Blog.
At VintageHairstyling.com, our goal is to provide you with the most helpful tutorials, tools, and products to achieve gorgeous retro looks yourself. Learn how to do vintage hair and makeup with books, videos, and free exclusive newsletters. Find extra helpful tips and ideas for your own unique look from the Bobby Pin Blog. Shop for everything you need like hairstyling tools to aid your efforts and retro cosmetics to achieve the pin-up look you have always admired. It’s all right here for you! The stylish ladies of the early and mid-20th century define for us now what the epitome of ladylike grace should be. My love for the enduring beauty of the flapper of the 1920s, the art deco bombshell of the 1930s, the pin-up of the 1940s, the rockabilly of the 1950s, and the mod of the 1960s is reflected in everything I create. Rita Hayworth was my first inspiration. In the movie Cover Girl, from the ‘40s, she wore a pompadour hairstyle that inspired the cover look for the book Vintage Hairstyling. Hayworth also inspired the look of one of the models on the cover of Retro Makeup. Women from the Golden Age of Hollywood like Grace Kelly in the ‘50s and Audrey Hepburn in the ‘60s were the inspiration for looks from Create Vintage-Inspired Wedding Hairstyles.

On the Bobby Pin Blog... The final installment of Vintage Makeup for Darker Skin Tones is done! The 1940s! I broke them up into 2 posts, because there was a lot to share. https://www.vintagehairstyling.com/bobbypinblog/2020/01/vintage-makeup-for-darker-skin-tones-in-the-1940s-part-2.html

Fashion inspired by things that happen at war… I’ve done several blog posts over the years highlighting the ties between WWII life and how living during such a significant war influenced beauty. ⭐️ Here’s another example. A couple months ago, I shared a bunch of history of the Grip-Tuth brand of hair combs on the Bobby Pin Blog. (Follow link in bio) This advertisement for the Nite-glo line, “Inspired by London’s Blackouts!”, is macabre to say the least. I’ve come across a few products that used glow-in-the-dark and the London Blackouts as a tie together. If you did not know the full history, Hitler’s Luftwaffe (Air Force) released a bombing campaign on the United Kingdom in 1940 and 1941 called the Blitz, named in the British press after the German word for lightning.⚡️⚡️⚡️ These bombing runs were at night 🌔 to make it harder for the British to see the fighter planes coming and shoot them down. The British came up with several ways to defend themselves, which included citywide blackouts. If the German planes can’t see the lights in the buildings, they literally can’t tell where the buildings 🏢 are and hopefully miss as many as possible.
This part of beauty history is fascinating for me and please email me any of your stories, photos or magazine ads you have collected!

Imagine being a hairdresser for a circus in the 1930s! On the Bobby Pin Blog, I thought this article from my September 1932 issue of Modern Beauty Shop would be great to share with you during this Halloween season. Reading it instantly made me think of the 1932 cult classic Freaks and, coincidentally, the hairdresser the article features worked with Ringling Bros. traveling circus at the same time as the famous "Doll Family" featured in the movie about sideshow act performers. https://www.vintagehairstyling.com/bobbypinblog/2019/10/one-of-us-one-of-us-the-life-of-a-hairstylist-working-for-a-traveling-circus-in-the-1930s.html

The best makeup primer I’ve found recently! I use Photofinish Primerizer moisturizer and primer in 1 from @smashboxcosmetics on myself, on my clients and I sent a bottle to my cousin. I use 2 pumps to do my entire face, focusing on my nose, cheeks, and chin where my liquid foundation often sinks into my pores creating a very unflattering dot effect. Let dry completely before applying your makeup. It only takes a minute or two.
It’s amazing! When I use it along with my stipple foundation brush from Sephora, I get a beautiful airbrush makeup effect. I was using one from Ulta, but they changed the formula and it does not work the same. I’ve used many primers and this one takes the cake. Other primers move around too much when you go to apply foundation. This one appears to stay put.

Tough as nails girls... I do hair and makeup for commercials as a way to help pay the bills and Dove came to Denver last year to make a commercial about this super cool lady.
Blue, a girl in our vintage community, is originally from Phoenix, and moved here to continue her career as an ironworker, a very predominantly male world. The stories she told me of her experiences as an ironworker were both fascinating and harrowing. She's as tough as they come.
But doesn't she look beautiful in this Dove commercial? I was honored to work with her.
ispot.tv Blue is an ironworker. She loves her job but she says it is brutal on her skin. Although the dirt on her skin is earned from her hard work, she likes to go home and uses the Dove Beauty Bar to wash off the grime and retain her natural beauty so she can dress up during the weekends. Dove says its soa...

What is your favorite movie beauty quote? Let’s all have a laugh.
In Grease, a musical in the movie collections of many retro lifestylers, the character Frenchy, a teenage ne'er-do-well, has her sights set on a bigger, better life than what Rydell High School has to offer. She tells her friends, "I'm gonna be a beautician ya know," right before she attempts piercing Sandy's ears. When Sandy asks her if it will hurt, Frenchy replies, "Sandy, Sandy. Beauty is pain."

The triangle hair net has been around since the #1950s. Curls dry faster with one of these as opposed to a scarf, because air circulates through better and evaporating water can escape more easily. Wrap this around your #wetset to hold your curls in place better while your hair sets. Go to VintageHairstyling.com to get your #snugsettrianglenet in lots of colors!

#Beehive time! This hairstyle is called the Susan. I love a big #1960sbeehive for a wedding! Why you ask? Because, when you are looking back at your photos years down the road, your hairstyle will be visible, unlike those boring low-hanging chingons. Am I right? The full steps for the Susan hairstyle are in my most current book, Create Vintage-Inspired Wedding Hairstyles, available on my website and on Amazon.

Being In Good Company… When a book you wrote is considered by someone good enough to be included in this group of greats. My step-by-step hairstyle book is pages and pages of #vintageupdo hairstyles and #vintageredcarpethair. It is full of tips and tricks.
I am so grateful that this regram from @blake_rachel_ even hints that my work belongs in the family of these other great artists. The book title, Create Vintage-Inspired Wedding Hairstyles, I admit, is misleading. #bridalhair was my inspiration, but the styles are designed for any formal occasion.

Wedding season is getting off to full swing! We #hairstylists love this season, because we get to do such fun, creative looks and we get to be a part of making a day very special.
I call this hairstyle the Joan. It’s my version of a #1930shairstyle that makes a great #redcarpethairstyle I think. My lovely model was Katy H. here in Colorado. All of the curl was done with a tapered wand curling iron! The really tiny one that is only ¾” at its largest end. The full steps for the Joan hairstyle are in my most current book, Create Vintage-Inspired Wedding Hairstyles, available on my website and on Amazon.
