Welcome to the world of Social Worker young man!
We need more black men in the fields of social work and mental health..
According to the NASW
“Black men are severely underrepresented in the social work field, making up roughly 1% to 2% of all practicing social workers. While the profession is highly diverse across racial lines overall, it remains heavily female—making up over 80% of the workforce—leaving Black men as one of the most underrepresented demographics in mental health.”
Repost CeeGee Enn Congrats to the class of 2026! The real work begins now!
Dr. Mona Dixon’s story is a reminder that where you start does not have to determine where you finish.
She grew up homeless, living in shelters, on the streets, and in a boarding home filled with mice and roaches. Some nights, she did her homework under a streetlight while her mother worked to provide for Mona and her two siblings.
At just 12 years old, after years of asking strangers for spare change and surviving unimaginable hardship, her family finally moved into an apartment through Section 8.
Through it all, her mother never gave up. She asked for help when she needed it. She kept her children close. She sacrificed in ways most people will never fully understand.
Now, Dr. Mona Dixon has earned her doctorate in organizational leadership, with research focused on nonprofit boards and fundraising.
On graduation day, she and her mother shared an emotional hug — a moment that represented more than a degree. It represented survival, sacrifice, love, and the power of a mother who refused to let her children’s circumstances define their future.
Dr. Dixon says this milestone belongs to her mother too, because it was her tireless love and sacrifice that helped make it possible.
