Took in a pregnant stray and she had 5 babies. Even with spay/neuter and above average care, it's crickets in a desert trying to adopt them out
I've tried facebook, nextdoor, craigslist, and calling the local rescues, nada zilch, nothing.
The best advice I was given so far was to release them in a park. I just can't bring myself to do that to kittens who have only known a safe home.
What can I do that's humane? I simply can't have all these cats in my home.
Above average care means flea/mite treatment, spay/neuter, antibiotics, immune supplements, dry food for grazing, wet food dinners, tons of toys, their own room and safe space, round the clock care for mother and kittens.
TIA
I'm sad because the vet told me the cat I'm going to adopt is 6-7 years old.
So I've been getting ready to adopt a beautiful girly stray that was living in my boyfriend's building for a few months, she is a sweetheart and I'm genuinely so overjoyed I get to take care of her and give her a great life. My boyfriend just called me after speaking to the vet to let me know she's actually 6-7 years old, and I can't stop crying because I genuinely thought she was maybe 2-3 years old at most, especially because of how small she is.
This breaks my heart and I hate not having found her earlier, I do tend to catastrophise things a lot, I'm very aware that 6-7 is not a senior, but it gives me less time with her than I thought I'd have. This is my first cat in almost 17 years (currently 24) and I'm just genuinely heartbroken, what if she's older than that? What if my time with her is very limited? She's overall healthy, spayed, vaccinated (actually missing one more that she'll be getting soon) but has a bit of an enlarged liver which means i have to take good care of her diet, which I will, I don't know, I'm just feeling frustrated and sad, especially because I adopted her to help with chronic depression... any advice? Words of encouragement? Anything, I just feel like a POS because I don't want the vet or my boyfriend to think I don't want to keep her just because she's middle aged, on the contrary, I just wish I had more time with her.
My cat started hating my girlfriend after she moved in.
For context my (M25) cat (M3) loved my girlfriend (F27) when they met, and was always very affectionate and loving with her. This past March she moved in to my apartment, and for the first month everything was okay. In April he ate a few of her plants (non toxic to cats) in our bedroom and since then we have been keeping the bedroom door closed. Since then his whole demeanor towards her has changed. He's grumpy, he hisses at her every day even when she just walks by. He's very rarely affectionate with her and seems to be hiding in his normal spots whenever she is home without me. He's eating normally and litter box is the same. I was hoping I could coax him into being nice again by having her give him treats and try to leave him alone when he's grumpy, but he's seemingly only getting worse. Does anyone have any advice on what I can do?
Edit: Wow, this got a lot more attention than I was expecting. I appreciate all the feedback and would like to mention that my girlfriend is also allergic to his dander, which is the other reason the door has stayed closed. The plants were just kind of the tipping point for that situation.
We Stole the neighbors cat
For background there is a cat that lives across the street from my grandmas. For the past couple of weeks, the cat will wander over to my grandma's and try to get in her garage and jump in her arms. The cat (to our knowledge) is strictly an outdoor cat. to add to this, whenever anyone would come over the cat would approach us and even hide under our cars. It is super friendly and is clearly very comfortable around people. From what we know the neighbors will feed the cat, but they feed it outside and we never really see it inside. We've only recently started seeing the cat within the past couple of months.
Just last night I went to my grandma's for family dinner and as soon as I pulled in the driveway, the cat ran up behind my car and followed me to the door. The cat proceeded to sit nestled up against the front door for the next 20 minutes before we opened the garage and the cat attempted to enter the garage and climb up my brother's back.
After the cat showed this behavior we checked the weather and it was only about 15 degrees and according to my mom, the cat had been outside for most of the day. After a short trip to the police who said they couldn't do anything for the cat since it was the weekend, we ended up calling a friend to come pick it up and hold onto it.
We decided as a family that if the neighbors are going to leave the cat outside in the 15 degree weather all day, they won't notice if it goes missing for a while. The cat was cold and skinny and it was hard to keep turning it away from my grandma's house.
Is it wrong that we had someone take the cat? I can't help but feel a bit guilty about the whole situation.
OK lets talk WET CAT FOOD IN THIS ECONOMY
HII what are you feeding your cats right now T.T ?!
I just did a cost analysis for our cats and with vet care, treats, toys, dry food, and wet food, and litter we have spent about 2500$ on 2 cats in 2025 .
we buy from pet smart, petvalu, and homes alive.
I used to feed my one cat whiskas and iams wet food and Purina kitten dry food when i was a student but she would get very sick randomly at least 1x/yr sick and i later found out it was probably her food even though she really liked it. SO i started trying different brands:
Merricks salmon dry food + chicken and salmon wet food combo -> good for a bit but then she started getting sick from the wet food. stopped that.
Temptation treats -> she can't have those at all she gets very sick from those
Tiki cat wet food + Merricks dry food combo -> good for a while until the formula for Merricks food seemed to have changed (food was a light colour) cat still ate it but started looking into it and as per what i read i found the ingredients weren't actually good for cats.
They got bored of Tiki cat and learned i shouldn't be feeding them mostly fish....
SO NOW as of this year i'm on Orijen fish dry food (will be switching to chicken) + Weruva wet food (all varieties but now they don't seem to want to touch any of the flavours) for treats we do Royal Canin dental food and orijen dried duck/game treats, and dried fish, friskies soup snacks, and Churru and Catit tube snacks.
The combo is great but I am looking for more affordable wet food because lets be real life has gotten VERY expensive. but i am looking for something with a good variety of flavours.
Any suggestions?? I have been looking at the following wet foods:
Wellness
Nulo
Almo
Royal Canin
EDITING TO ADD: thank you so much everyone!!! I'm scared to try FF because of the carageenan but seems like so many of you have had goodluck with it! maybe ill go on FF...
I found this in an old reddit post so ill share here its a PDF of cat nutrition written by a DMV CAT FOOD - NUTRITIONAL COMPOSITION Data compiled by Lisa A. Pierson, DVM
here is her website, I'm browsing through it now and will definitely be looking at switching to wet food only. I think this will help cost wise too. Lisa's website . She seems like someone who really cares about this topic and has dedicated over 20 years to the matter.
3 weeks … I still cry every day
I lost my beloved baby after 15 years… I had him since I was 10.
I still Ball my eyes out everyday.
I don’t understand. I haven’t left the house or moved his things on my bed. I Cary his ashes with me everywhere.
I feel his fur that I had shaved from him every day.
I miss him so much. Im so devastated. I feel like no one understands how deeply im hurt. I don’t understand how you can be with someone everyday for 15 years 24/7 and suddenly … they’re gone , never to be seen again.
Nalah was healthy. He had been tested that year for everything. He was fine. Then suddenly a heart attack. He died cuddling me … I was rubbing him. Then boom heart attack… he rolled over and was gone. I must have drove 90 mph to the hospital… my husband did cpr the whole time. They worked on him for 20 minutes… he never came back. I just fell to my knees and started crying … and I haven’t stopped for 3 weeks.
I didn’t put up a Christmas tree…didn’t feel right without him knocking down all the ornaments. I can’t celebrate anything.
I still don’t believe it. I don’t understand.
I feel so devastated. We were inseparable. We spent every minute together Im a student and I study online completely. We’re together all day & all night.
I’m a mess. I’ve never been so hurt and depressed. I just want to see him again. Smell him again .
I was thinking to myself , how we grew up together he saw me complete elementary school… middle … high school… college… marriage . Becoming a mother … I asked myself how a grumpy old cat was so patient with children ! My children who loved him.
And I realized… because I was a child … I was a kid … when we began our journey.
I miss him so much. I haven’t washed my hair …he was needing in it before he died.. I feel like it’s the last thing I have on me that he touched . 💔💔 I’ve had it in a slicked back pony… no one has noticed … i can’t even think when I will wash it… I miss him so much.
Any advice on coping with extreme grief ? I feel like like I lost a part of me 😞 I’m not coping well I’m so sad , he was so beautiful. I love him so much I wish this wasn’t real. I haven’t slept without him in 15 years… I’m even selling my house … I can’t even be in it or look at it anymore it feels so haunted. I keep expecting to see him everywhere & I don’t … it’s so miserable. I’m so heartbroken 😞💔 any advice . I think about him being gone and passing every second of the day. I walk around with his urn…. I’m so frkn sad.
does anyone else feel like they love their cats too much?
i have two ginger litter mates, fred and george. i found them outside when they were around 3 months (after experiencing a bad breakup) and they’re now 3.5 years old. they’re my first ever cats after lying to myself that i was a dog person my whole life, and i love them so much. like, so so so so so much. i’m actually obsessed with them. i’ve had anxiety basically my entire life, and i love them sooo much it almost makes me sick. i would die for them. i cannot imagine life without them, and i always find myself worrying about them like crazy for no reason, and imagining horrible, sad scenarios and make myself full on sob. when i’m not home with them, i think about them constantly and look through the almost 4,000 pics i’ve taken of them. they are literally my sons, they make me so incredibly happy everyday, but i just love them so much that it stresses me out. does anyone else feel this way too?? or am i just actually crazy lmfao 😭😭🩷
New kitten bringing dead mice to bed EVERYDAY!
We are experienced pet parents. Have a cat and a dog at home. Both are trained well and haven't created nuisance. This new kitten walked in our home (we have a pet door so entry is always accessible) and we decided to adopt him. Since it was constantly raining outside we thought we'll provide him shelter and food. He used to meow a lot so we named him Siren. His meowing has subsided but once he got comfortable in the house, he started brining in dead animals. It was cockroaches earlier now it's dead mice. At least two a day. We are running out of sheets. We've tried everything we know - bell in neck, cutting his nails. We are unable to monitor his outdoors activity as the pet door is kind of permanent and we do not want to restrict access for other two pets. We are regretting this adoption because the overall hygiene issues and our lack of success at stopping him. We have gotten attached, and so has he. Our dog loves him, and they get along like brothers. It's cute to see them together, cuddling and all. Is there any way to stop him from bringing dead mice? Especially to the bed?
Would it be cruel to stop my cat sucking on my blanket?
She's about 7 months old and loves cuddling up to me in bed and suckling on my blanket. The wet spots all over it are really starting to get annoying but I feel too bad to make her stop... She'll do it for ages while she kneads it and purrs and she seems so content, I know she's most likely doing it because she was taken from her mum too young (not my choice, she was a very reluctantly accepted gift) and I don't want to stop her if its going to take her coping mechanism away. She has her own blankets and cuddly toys but she seems to prefer my blanket.
What do I do?
Edit: I'm going to try what many people have suggested and put her blanket over my own. Thanks!
Why can’t cats be service animals?
My new cat has started to come over and head butt my whenever my blood pressure spikes or is about to spike.
I feel like with training she could definitely do this every time and I would know to get my blood pressure cuff to check my stats and take my medicine and relax until it goes down. Cause sometimes I don’t realize until it’s too late and it’s already super high and I don’t have the ability to grab the stuff I need.
She’s also SOOO good when I take her out. We even went to ho***rs yesterday and sat at the outdoor tables after her vet visit.
