Consistency is perhaps the most frequently invoked and the least examined methodological commitment in medical ethics. Many of the field’s most familiar arguments contain a consistency premise somewhere, sometimes openly, sometimes implicitly. Many of the canonical questions turn on some aspect of consistency: if marginal human cases have rights, why not animals? If passive euthanasia is permissible, why not active euthanasia? If therapy is acceptable, why not enhancement? Such arguments from consistency are rhetorically powerful: a charge of contradiction or double standards seems to generate a prima facie reason against a given moral judgement, policy or procedure. An inconsistency between even a sophisticated moral theory and a single persistent moral intuition can be enough to force a theory’s revision. Appeals to consistency are also theoretically parsimonious: ethical theories come in many shapes but almost all share an aversion to inconsistency as a minimal constraint on reasoning.
