UPDATE: On weekends and holidays, reservations are now required and are only available for residents and those with disabilities. Go to @walthamrecreation for details. No reservations are needed on weekdays, which are open to the public regardless of residency.

Now open daily 10am to 7pm! This new universal playground at 📍200 Trapelo Road, Waltham MA is a wonderfully inclusive playground. Fully fenced and gated, it includes a wheelchair swing, adaptive zipline (alongside a traditional zipline), several ramps, and other one-of-a-kind elements. UPDATE: Splash pad still has not opened for summer 2025— see Waltham Recreation for timing.

This new park is on the grounds of the former Fernald State School, where people with intellectual disabilities lived and learned. Not all aspects of their treatment were positive, and there are dark and painful elements of the history of this site. This park is part of an effort to improve on the lessons of the past by creating inclusive spaces where all can play together.

The splash pad and bathrooms will be open later in June (Check Waltham Rec for timing updates). There are currently port-a-potties.

Note that the gate around the entire facility & parking lot is locked overnight until they open at 10am, you early birds are likely going to need to wait!

Have you ever seen such an inclusive playground? Where else are there elements that all can enjoy?

Thank you to our Waltham editor Becky for the videos, and our former Wayland editor for the photos.
