If you can follow a cake recipe, you can make soap 🧼

Just like baking a cake, bake time is crucial. Too long in the oven, and your cake is too hard. Not enough time, and your cake is too soft.

Unlike cake making, we don’t use an oven, but wait time in the mold before cutting is crucial. If you wait too long, it can be too difficult to cut. If you don’t wait long enough, it can be mushy and soft and will stick to the mold.

Variables like type of dairy, type of fats/oils, room temperature, humidity, natural colorants, and even essential oils can drastically change the cut time.

For example: During yesterday’s Soaping Session, we made 84 Loaves of Soap
-Same recipe (Goat Milk & Lard)
-Every other variable controlled except for types of natural colorants and essential oils
-76 Loaves needed 20 hours before cutting
-8 Loaves needed ONLY 4 hours before cutting

What caused the variance?

Essential Oils like Lime, Patchouli, Wintergreen (and a few others) can act like a catalyst speeding up the reaction, which hardens the soap at a much faster rate.

Shout out to @afarmgirlinthemaking and @full.circle.homestead for representing our “Soaping Clean” book methods at the @cultivatehomesteadretreat event.

We can’t wait to see all the lovely soap you create. Happy Soaping!

Yes! This. Right. Here.

Homesteading may not be the way of living for many in our nation and culture, and that’s ok. We are all called to different spheres of influence and missions in this beautiful life. But for over 6,000 people this weekend, there was a unity like never before. Homesteaders of America feels like family. Not just with the people you know there, but with the people you don’t know, too.

The atmosphere was vibrating with hope, peace, and perseverance. With confidence and grace, each sponsor, vendor, speaker, attendee, and volunteer stepped up to the plate to teach, work, learn, and share.

Homesteaders of America may be an event, but more than anything it is a true coming together of one mind and accord. Homesteading isn’t a trend, it’s a calling. For whatever reason, you and your family are called to this way of living. Don’t doubt it for a minute. America needs you. The world needs you.

Welcome to creating true systems that work and are sustainable. Welcome to reforming government and culture. Welcome to making real life friends and community that will be there for you when you’re in need. Welcome to discernment of the times and restoration of the earth. The time is now.

Whether you are raising livestock to butcher, to breed and sell, or to create things from their products, holding an appreciation for those animals gives every piece more meaning.

Learn to properly care for animals with books like “The Guide to Homestead Dairy Sheep” and upcoming “Homestead Beef Cattle.” Take it a little further and learn to use animals products to create something new as in the upcoming “Soaping Clean with Dairy and Fats from the Homestead” and “Natural Dyes on Wool.”

Love on those homestead animals a little extra tonight ❤️
