A handful of shells can tell you a lot about life in the Ten Thousand Islands… 🐚🌊

Take the oyster—it may not be the flashiest shell you’ll find, but it plays an important role in the ecosystem, with a single oyster capable of filtering around 50 gallons of water a day. Then there are local finds like lettered olives, tulip shells, and lace murex, each with its own distinct shape, pattern, and place in these waters.

That’s what makes exploring out here so interesting: what looks like a simple shell can actually be a small piece of a much bigger ecosystem 🙌🏼

These mangrove waterways provide important habitat for a variety of waterbirds, giving them places to rest, feed, and perch above the water. Look closely as you explore and you’ll start noticing just how much life is tucked into the landscape around you.

Another reminder that out here, the wildlife is part of the view 🌊💚

Tiny bird, BIG personality 🦉

Meet the Burrowing Owl — one of the more unique little residents you might come across around Marco Island. Unlike most owls, these guys spend much of their time on the ground and make their homes in underground burrows.

As Kristen explains, those burrows provide an important place for them to nest and protect their young — and you’ll often spot them close to the ground searching for their next meal.

Just another reminder that there’s wildlife everywhere you look in Southwest Florida… sometimes you just have to know where to look 👀
