My rule of thumb is always to stand firm. the more looseyyy goosey you are the more people will not respect your policies.
If its a client that has never cancelled on you... and its a one time thing i let it go. i understand life happens, it just can't happen all the time!
Its business & nothing personal at the end of the day!
