This was taken from a devotional I’m reading with some friends. The truth in this was too poignant not to share. Full devo below:

“For those who love God, all things work together for good.”
“But I trust in You, O LORD; I say, ‘You are my God.’”

“Romans 8:28 is one of the most quoted promises in Scripture. It is also one of the most misunderstood.

Paul does not say that all things are good. He says they have worked together for good. That language assumes intention. It assumes design. It assumes that God is not observing history from a distance but actively weaving it toward an appointed end.

The good in this verse is not defined by comfort or convenience. In the very next verses, Paul speaks about being conformed to the image of Christ. The good is that Christ is formed in His people and that God’s saving purpose in Him moves forward without obstruction.

That changes how the verse lands.

This promise is not that every outcome will feel pleasant. It is that nothing can ultimately derail God’s redemptive purpose in your life or in history. Not betrayal. Not delay. Not loss. Not your own weakness.

“All things” includes what you would never have chosen.

There are seasons you would shorten if you could. There are conversations you would undo. There are chapters you would prefer not to have written into your story. But Scripture insists that none of these fall outside the sovereign hand of God.

Working together suggests process. Threads that look disconnected from below are woven into pattern from above. The tapestry is not visible while you stand inside it.

Paul’s confidence in this promise was not abstract. He wrote it as a man acquainted with suffering. Beatings. Imprisonment. Rejection. Uncertainty. He did not claim ease. He claimed sovereignty.

The cross remains the clearest proof. What looked like injustice became redemption. What looked like defeat became enthronement. If the worst act in history became the means of salvation, then nothing in your life is beyond God’s ability to redeem and repurpose for His glory.

David understood this as well. In Psalm 31, he says, “But I trust in You, O LORD; I say, ‘You are my God. My times are in Your hand.'” That is not passive resignation. It is allegiance. He is not claiming to understand everything. He is declaring ownership. You are my God. My life is not drifting. It rests in Your hand.

Trust is not optimism about circumstances. It is settled confidence in the character of God when circumstances remain unclear.

This week has widened your vision beyond isolated moments. Now the call is not to decode every event, but to anchor yourself in the One who governs them.

Your story is not ultimate. Christ’s glory is. And the promise of Romans 8 is that God will not fail in accomplishing His purpose in Christ, including His purpose in you.”
