There’s a place downtown
where the door opens
and the day feels a little softer.

Where something warm is brewing,
something handmade is waiting,
and sometimes you find a little piece of home when you weren’t looking for it.

It might be a candle.

A cozy pair of socks.
A story shared across the counter.

But really,
it was never about the things.

I think we showed Called To Wander a true Minot welcome and as I told them, when you are in North Dakota, it’s like being at Grandma’s house…no one will ever let you go hungry! 🤣

Happy to be a part of their journey to learn about Scandinavian heritage in the Minot area.

This morning, we had the joy of spending some time with Chris and Lindsay from Called To Wander sharing something that is about so much more than flour, potatoes, and a hot griddle: the art of making lefse.

Lefse is one of those foods that carries a story with it.

For generations, families have gathered around kitchen tables to mix, roll, bake, and eat this humble Norwegian flatbread. Recipes were passed down, techniques were learned by watching someone who already knew what they were doing, and somewhere along the way, a few secrets were inevitably shared with the next generation.

Because lefse isn't really just a recipe.

It's heritage you can make with your hands.
It's the stories told while you're rolling. The laughter when the first one doesn't quite cooperate. The satisfaction of watching a thin, perfectly round (and often not so round!) piece of dough land on the griddle. And, of course, the inevitable debate over whether butter and sugar, cinnamon and sugar, or something else entirely belongs on top. 😉

We loved getting to share a little piece of that tradition with Chris and Lindsay and watching them get their hands in the dough and give it a try. We even got to battle it out with how to best fold lefse 🤣

There's something pretty special about realizing that traditions don't stay alive because they're written down in a cookbook.

They stay alive because we keep sharing them.

Today, we got to pass a little piece of our Scandinavian heritage along and that's a tradition worth continuing.

Thank you, Chris and Lindsay, for spending the morning with us. We hope you left with a little flour on your hands, a few new lefse skills, and an even deeper appreciation for the stories that can be found in the foods we make. ❤️

🧀 Cheese Louise — savory, cheesy, garlicky and just salty enough to make you say, “Well, I’ll have another.”

They’re made right here in North Dakota, inspired by the food, humor and traditions we grew up with.

A little prairie.
