💜Protective styles should protect your hair—not leave you wondering what you’re being exposed to. 💜

💜 A few things to consider:

✨ Research the brand before purchasing
✨ Look for products with clear ingredient/material information
✨ Don’t assume “human hair,” “organic,” “vegan,” or “plant-based” automatically means chemical-free
✨ If hair causes burning, severe itching, redness, swelling, or irritation, don’t ignore your body’s reaction
✨ Stylists should also consider their own exposure because we handle extension hair repeatedly during installations
✨ Ask questions about the hair being used for your service

One of the biggest concerns is long-term and repeated exposure, because extensions can remain in contact with the scalp, skin, and hands for weeks at a time

It does NOT mean that every package of braiding hair is dangerous or that you should stop wearing protective styles.

It DOES mean that we should become more informed consumers and pay attention to the products we purchase and use.

As hairstylists and clients, we love a good protective style—but we also need to pay attention to what we are putting on our hair, scalp, skin, and in our homes.

Recent testing has raised concerns about human hair, synthetic hair, and plant-based hair extensions. Researchers have detected substances including lead, heavy metals, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in tested hair-extension products. Some testing has also identified chemicals that are associated with potential health concerns.
