The Bee Leaders were so thankful to have Alderwoman Jessica Vargas come to our weekly meeting yesterday. We had the chance to talk with her about relationships, sexual health, food insecurity, the importance of community and her reasons for doing the really challenging work she does. She is such an amazing advocate for young people and we can not wait to see and talk with her again! New Britain Youth Empowerment Services and the Bee Leaders 🐝 can't thank you enough!!

We at New Britain Youth Empowerment Services (YES!) Are so proud to introduce two of our NB Bee Leaders! Meet Nora (on left) and Nani (on right).
Nora is ending her sophomore year at NBHS and has been such a big part of our Bee Leaders team. Creating social media posts, talking to her peers about healthy relationships, boundaries and safe choices concerning reproductive health. We are so proud of her work and her dedication to the Bee Leaders!
Nani is also a NBHS student, ending her junior year. Nani has been a Bee Leader since the beginning and has helped to mold the program. Nani is an excellent presenter, is willing to go the extra mile always and has truly made an impact on her peers while discussing safety, empowerment and teen pregnancy. We are so lucky to have her as a Bee Leader!

Bee Leaders and Strive Girl Talk Day!

05/13/2026

The Bee Leaders went to Slade Middle School for a "Girl Talk" with the Strive program yesterday. We focused our conversation on hygiene, particularly around Menstrual Cycles. The Strive students were each given a "Period Hygiene pack" that the Bee Leaders put together for them. It was a great afternoon! Thanks Julie Cyr for giving us this opportunity!!

Recently the Bee Leaders were challenged to create a "Real Life Reel" directly connected to relationships and healthy boundaries. Imani, Melissa and Nani created a reel on how "some people are comfortable with affection and how some people can be affectionate and not feel comfortable". Sometimes in relationships we accept things that aren't comfortable for us because we don't want to hurt our friends, family or partners, but we really are hurting ourselves. It's okay to say No and "Bee" proud that you did!

Yesterday NB Bee Leader Imani volunteered her time and participated in Klingberg Family Centers Annual Hop Along Event. It is so important to take advantage of volunteering opportunities in the community, we are so proud and thankful for the work Imani did!!

The New Britain Bee Leaders and New Britain Youth Empowerment Services want to thank Alderwoman Jessica Vargas and Connecticut Foodshare for inviting us to visit and giving a behind the scenes tour of your amazing facility. We were so moved at the work that is being done for Connecticut residents facing food insecurity. We can't wait to come volunteer, by helping to sort food and give back to our community!
