Birthplace of the Quickstand Mode off Coercive Control
One of the ways coercive controllers target folks in the workplace is through isolation. Isolation might be used by isolating the target from their coworkers by turning them against the target. Or they might isolate them from information they need to do their job. They may even place false negative statements about the target into employee reviews in case the target realizes they are being coercively controlled, so that if they complain to HR, the coercive controller has already made it look like the target is to blame.
Although coercive control legislation currently only covers coercive control within intimate partner violence, coercive control can happen anywhere people are willing and able to abuse their power.
Coercive controllers both lie and gaslight. But what’s the difference between lying and gaslighting? Lying is knowingly saying something that’s untrue. Gaslighting is lying in a way that the other person begins to doubt their own memory, perception or reality. What makes gaslighting so harmful is the fact that it causes the other person to doubt their sanity.

We know from the research that’s not true! Post separation is the most dangerous time for the victims in these cases! Homicide risks are highest following separation.
How do we prevent misidentifying a targeted victim of coercive control as a perpetrator? Context! The Battered Women”s Justice Project uses three things to establish context; intent, meaning and effect (impact).
Have you ever heard the term intimate terrorism? Coercive control is the legal term, but it has also been called intimate terrorism. Coercive control can be slave-like it can be hostage-like and it can be terrorizing!
This is today’s reminder that you cannot judge whether a behavior is part of a pattern of coercive control or not without including context. The exact same behavior used by a coercive controller to coerce and control could be used by a targeted victim to protect themself or someone else. So you must include the context within which that behavior occurred to sternunevif it was coercive control or self defense.
