USS Denver Suffers Major Damage After Collision with USNS Yukon

The USS Denver (LPD-9), a U.S. Navy Austin-class amphibious transport dock, suffered serious structural damage during an underway replenishment operation involving the fleet oiler USNS Yukon (T-AO-202).

During the operation, the bow of the Yukon struck the port side of USS Denver, tearing away a significant section of the ship’s hull plating. The collision demonstrated the dangers and complexity of underway replenishment, where massive vessels operate in close proximity while transferring fuel and supplies at sea.

Despite the severity of the impact, USS Denver remained stable and under control. The ship’s damage control team quickly responded to the emergency, assessing the damaged compartments and taking measures to protect the vessel’s watertight integrity.

The robust construction and compartmentalized design of the Austin-class amphibious ships also played an important role in helping Denver withstand the collision. Rather than becoming a catastrophic casualty, the ship was able to safely proceed to Pearl Harbor for emergency repairs and a detailed technical assessment.

The incident highlighted both the risks faced by Navy ships during complex maritime operations and the importance of highly trained damage-control crews. For the sailors aboard USS Denver, rapid response, disciplined procedures, and the ship’s resilient design helped prevent a serious collision from becoming a much greater disaster.

SM U-16: A Submarine That Survived War, but Not the Crane

For more than a century, the wreck of SM U-16 rested quietly beneath the waters near Scharhörn, at the mouth of Germany’s Elbe River. Built in Kiel in 1911, the German submarine served during the First World War and survived the conflict intact. Ironically, it was not the war that destroyed her it was the surrender that followed.

In 1919, while being moved under the terms of the armistice, U-16 sank in approximately 20 meters of water. The wreck remained on the seabed for more than a century and had been known since 1960. For decades, there was little reason to disturb it.

That changed as shipping traffic and navigation requirements around the Elbe evolved. Following adjustments to the Elbe and Outer Elbe shipping channels, German authorities reassessed the wreck and determined that it had become an obstruction to navigation.

On the night of August 31, 2025, the Dutch floating crane Matador 3 began the difficult task of recovering the historic submarine. After 106 years underwater, however, the aging hull could no longer withstand the stresses of salvage. As the crane lifted the wreck, the submarine broke apart into several sections.

Two major sections were transported by pontoons to Cuxhaven, while the remaining section was recovered two days later.

The recovery immediately sparked controversy. An archaeologist from the state heritage authorities criticized the operation, arguing that the wreck could have been moved only a few meters away from the shipping lane without destroying such a rare historical artifact. Others argued that preserving the submarine underwater or restoring it would have been technically possible, but prohibitively expensive.

Authorities ultimately concluded that the deteriorated hull was in too poor a condition for preservation. The submarine was therefore destined for scrapping. Museums, however, requested individual artifacts, including components such as a hatch cover. No am******on was found aboard the wreck, while its batteries were handled separately.

Although the physical submarine could not be saved, an important part of its history was preserved.

The German Maritime Museum in Bremerhaven documented the wreck as soon as the recovered sections became accessible in Cuxhaven. Using detailed photography, drone imagery, and laser scanning, researchers created a comprehensive 3D digital model of U-16 and its recovered components.

The historic submarine may now be physically dismantled, but digitally, her form and story remain intact.

SM U-16 survived the First World War, more than a century beneath the sea, and countless years of history. In the end, it was the machinery of salvage not the weapons of war that finally broke her apart. ⚓🇩🇪

The USS Iowa Turret 2 Explosion — April 19, 1989

On April 19, 1989, the legendary battleship USS Iowa (BB-61) was conducting a routine training exercise in the Caribbean when disaster struck.

A massive explosion suddenly erupted inside Turret No. 2, one of the battleship’s three enormous 16-inch gun turrets. The blast caused severe damage within the gun turret and tragically claimed the lives of 47 U.S. Navy sailors.

The explosion was powerful enough to cause catastrophic destruction inside the turret. However, the turret’s heavily armored structure absorbed much of the blast, helping prevent the damage from spreading throughout the ship. USS Iowa remained afloat and seaworthy after the incident.

The disaster triggered one of the most controversial naval investigations of the era. Early theories and conclusions were heavily debated, leading to intense scrutiny from Navy officials, Congress, investigators, and the public.

Further technical analysis eventually focused on the possibility that the explosion resulted from an accidental ignition of the propellant during the loading process, rather than deliberate action. The precise circumstances surrounding the accident became the subject of years of debate and investigation.

The USS Iowa tragedy remains one of the most significant incidents in the history of American battleships. It serves as a powerful reminder of the enormous risks involved in operating massive naval artillery and the importance of safety, engineering, and rigorous procedures aboard warships.

Today, the memory of the 47 sailors who lost their lives aboard Turret No. 2 remains an enduring part of USS Iowa’s history.

🇺🇸✈️ WINGS OVER DALLAS — A TRAGIC LOSS OF TWO WWII LEGENDS

On November 12, 2022, a tragic mid-air collision occurred during the Wings Over Dallas Air Show at Dallas Executive Airport, Texas.

Two historic World War II-era aircraft a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress and a Bell P-63 Kingcobra collided in mid-air during a demonstration flight and crashed within the airport grounds.

The aircraft involved were operated by the Commemorative Air Force and flown by experienced volunteer pilots. There were no passengers aboard, and no spectators or members of the public on the ground were injured.

The tragedy claimed the lives of all six crew members aboard the two aircraft.

The incident drew worldwide attention, not only because of the loss of life, but because two historic aircraft representing an important chapter of World War II aviation were also lost.

The B-17 Flying Fortress was one of the most iconic heavy bombers of the Second World War, while the P-63 Kingcobra represented an important generation of American fighter aircraft.

Following the accident, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) launched an investigation to determine exactly how the two aircraft came into contact during the aerial demonstration.

Today, we remember the six aviators who lost their lives while helping preserve and share the history of these legendary aircraft.

🇬🇧⚓ HMS ANTELOPE (F170) — THE TRAGEDY IN SAN CARLOS BAY

On May 23, 1982, during the Falklands War, the Royal Navy frigate HMS Antelope (F170) came under attack in the San Carlos area by Argentine A-4 Skyhawk aircraft.

Two 1,000-pound bombs struck the ship but failed to detonate immediately, leaving the crew facing a terrifying situation. The unexploded bombs remained embedded in the hull while an explosive ordnance disposal team worked to make them safe.

The following day, tragedy struck.

While attempts were being made to deal with the unexploded bombs, one of them detonated, igniting a massive fire aboard the frigate. The flames spread toward the ship's am******on stores, triggering a series of violent explosions that tore through Antelope's structure.

The damage became impossible to control.

The crew was forced to abandon ship as fire and explosions continued to rip through the frigate. Eventually, HMS Antelope sank in San Carlos Bay.

Twenty-two crew members lost their lives, while many others were injured.

Today, the wreck lies beneath the waters of San Carlos Bay at approximately 24 meters (79 feet) deep. Her remains serve as a solemn reminder of the intensity and danger of the Falklands War and of the sailors who fought aboard her.

She entered the battle as a warship.

She left it as a memorial beneath the sea.

🇬🇧⚓ HMS SHEFFIELD (D80) — THE MISSILE STRIKE THAT SHOCKED THE ROYAL NAVY

On May 4, 1982, during the Falklands War, the Royal Navy guided-missile destroyer HMS Sheffield (D80) was struck by an AM39 Exocet missile launched by an Argentine Super Étendard aircraft.

The missile slammed into Sheffield’s starboard side. Although its warhead reportedly failed to detonate, the impact and burning rocket fuel triggered a devastating fire that rapidly spread through the ship.

The damage was catastrophic.

Electrical systems were disabled. Firefighting capabilities were severely compromised. Thick smoke and intense heat made it increasingly difficult for the crew to control the blaze.

Eventually, the order was given to abandon ship.

HMS Sheffield remained afloat for several days before finally sinking while under tow on May 10, 1982, becoming one of the most significant British naval losses of the Falklands conflict.

Twenty sailors lost their lives.

The loss of Sheffield had a profound impact on the Royal Navy. It highlighted the devastating threat posed by modern anti-ship missiles and prompted renewed attention to damage control, firefighting, ship survivability, electronic warfare, and air-defense procedures.

🇯🇵⚓ IJN MUTSU — THE BATTLESHIP THAT EXPLODED IN HER OWN HARBOR

At 12:13 p.m. on June 8, 1943, the Japanese battleship Mutsu lay anchored at Hashirajima in Hiroshima Bay when a massive explosion suddenly tore through her No. 3 main turret magazine.

The blast was catastrophic.

Mutsu was effectively broken in two. Her forward section capsized and sank almost immediately, while the stern remained above the water until the following morning. Of roughly 1,121 men aboard, around 849 were ultimately recovered from the wreck, while hundreds of others were lost in the disaster.

The official investigation blamed sabotage by a disgruntled crew member, but the conclusion remained controversial and has never been universally accepted by historians.

Because the loss of a battleship in a Japanese home anchorage was a devastating blow to morale, the Navy attempted to conceal the disaster. Survivors were dispersed among other units, while salvage personnel were reportedly given misleading information about the identity of the wreck.

Then came one of the most remarkable naval salvage operations in Japanese history.

Beginning in the 1950s and continuing through the 1970s, divers and salvage crews recovered Mutsu piece by piece. Her imperial chrysanthemum crest was raised in 1953. A 140 mm gun followed in 1963.

From 1970 to 1978, the Fukada Salvage Company undertook a massive recovery operation.

The 900-ton No. 4 main turret was brought back to the surface.

Then came the No. 3 turret the very turret whose magazine explosion had destroyed the battleship. Remarkably, the turret itself had survived largely intact.

Guns, equipment, fittings, and sections of the ship were recovered and preserved at museums and memorial sites across Japan.

By the end of the operation, approximately three-quarters of Mutsu had been recovered, including the remains of 849 crewmen.

But part of Mutsu remains where she fell.

Her forward section including the bridge and bow still rests on the seabed of Hiroshima Bay.

A battleship built to project power across the Pacific now lies silent beneath the water.

Her turrets were raised.
Her guns were raised.
Her sailors were brought home.

But the bow of Mutsu remains below an underwater memorial to the men who never returned.

🇺🇸⚓ USS WASP (CV-7) — FROM MALTA TO THE BOTTOM OF THE CORAL SEA IN FOUR MONTHS

Few ships in World War II had a story as dramatic as USS Wasp (CV-7).

In the spring of 1942, Malta was under relentless attack and desperately needed fighter aircraft. Wasp was given a unique mission: carry British Spitfires across the Mediterranean and launch them toward the besieged island.

She did it once.

Then she returned and did it again.

After the second mission, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill sent Wasp a famous message:

“Who said a Wasp couldn't sting twice?”

Just four months later, Wasp was fighting in the Pacific.

On September 15, 1942, while supporting operations near Guadalcanal, the carrier was attacked by the Japanese submarine I-19. Several torpedoes struck her starboard side, igniting aviation fuel and causing devastating fires.

Captain Forrest Sherman delayed abandoning ship while every possible effort was made to save the carrier. But the damage was beyond recovery.

That evening, USS Wasp was finished by torpedoes from the destroyer USS Lansdowne.

193 American sailors lost their lives.

For decades, Wasp remained lost beneath the Pacific. Then, in January 2019, the research vessel Petrel located her wreck nearly 14,000 feet below the surface, finally revealing the resting place of a carrier that had fought on two oceans.

USS Wasp's career was short but extraordinary.

She helped reinforce Malta when the island desperately needed fighters. She carried the fight across the Atlantic and Mediterranean. Then she sailed into the Pacific and made the ultimate sacrifice during the brutal struggle for Guadalcanal.

Her story represents the courage of the sailors and airmen who fought during some of America's darkest days of World War II.

Today, the Wasp rests silently in the deep.

Her flight deck is gone.
Her aircraft are silent.
Her crew has long since passed into history.

But her legacy remains.

She stung twice and then gave everything for victory. 🕊️🇺🇸⚓

Behind the Steel: Maintaining America’s Aircraft Carriers

This striking photograph offers a rare look beneath the waterline of a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier, revealing the enormous hull, propellers, and rudders while the ship rests inside a dry dock for maintenance or overhaul.

Standing beside the massive propellers, workers appear almost tiny providing a powerful sense of just how enormous these warships are. USS Hartford Survives a Devastating Collision

On March 20, 2009, the Los Angeles-class nuclear-powered attack submarine USS Hartford (SSN-768) collided with the amphibious transport dock USS New Orleans (LPD-18) while transiting the Strait of Hormuz. The accident occurred at approximately 1:00 a.m. local time, while Hartford was operating at or near periscope depth.

The impact caused significant damage to Hartford’s sail, periscope, and port bow plane, dramatically deforming the submarine's upper structure. Reports later indicated that Hartford rolled approximately 85 degrees during the collision.

Despite the severity of the collision, the submarine's nuclear propulsion plant was unaffected, and Hartford remained capable of operating under her own power. Fifteen sailors suffered minor injuries, while no personnel aboard New Orleans were injured.

The collision also damaged USS New Orleans, which suffered a ruptured fuel tank and released approximately 25,000 gallons of marine diesel fuel into the water.

Hartford later reached Bahrain, where Navy engineers conducted extensive inspections and began repairs. The damaged sail became one of the most recognizable visual reminders of the accident—and of the remarkable resilience of a submarine that survived a violent collision while its nuclear propulsion system remained intact.
