something to remember as both the teacher/instructor and as a student ‼️

As .joshua said, the important word here is เลี้ยง “Liang” which can mean: to raise (children), train, feed, care for, rear (children, animals), nurture, help grow. 👶

เลี้ยงงูมีพิษ ดีกว่า เลี้ยงศิษย์ ลืมตัว
“It is better to nurture/help raise poisonous snakes than to raise/nurture/train students who forget where they come from!” 🚨🐍

ลืมตัว could also translate as: forget their training; forget what has been given to them and by whom; forget themselves; turn to the dark side🚨‼️

Not your average “meditation” talk. Our Assistant Director .joshua studied in Thailand as a monk under the cream of the crop and shares what they passed onto him. Be sure to save it so you can come back to it when you need! 🧘🏾‍♂️🧘‍♀️

Wat Po, one of the most influential temples and Museums for Traditional Thai Medicine; especially in the Royal tradition. Here - in the แพทย์ศาสตร์สงเคราะห์ “Phaet-Saht-Song-Kroh” Royal medical text finished under King Rama V - is where we first see the uber famous เส้นประธานสิบ, “10 Sen Lines” system in modern and commercial Thai Massage. New information regarding this system is coming to light, and explains a lot of the missing traditional Thai medical theory gaps that many have previously tried to fill using Ayurveda and TCM! Fascinating stuff 🤓

The Festival of ลอยกระทง Loy Krathong is a time to give respects and honor back to Mother Earth. Traditionally it is used to give homage to พระแม่คงคา the Goddess of the Ganga River in India, as well as make offerings to the Hair Relic of Lord Buddha said to reside in the Heavens. 👼🏼

Incense and candles are put on a กระทง “Krathong”
floating ritual vessel or basket and aspirations or wishes are made. The Krathong is then gently cast into the body of water one is nearby: lake, stream, river, ocean. The origins of this seem to be a mixing of both Indian and Chinese traditions, but according to King Rama the 4th, it is a Hindu festival that was adapted to Buddhists. The candle and incense venerate the Buddha, while releasing the Krathong is a symbol of letting go, both of one’s own anger/greed/jealousy/pride/clinging/ignorance/delusion as well as one’s past transgressions. 🪔

It also coincides with the Lanna festival of ยี่เป็ง which [email protected] the full moon of their second lunar month, the 12th of the Thai Lunar calendar. And it is seen as a time to make merit and do good! 🙏

Wishing you all a wonderful week! 🙌

Over 2500yrs ago Lord Buddha spoke of 5 Powers, or 5 Strengths, that generate success. They are considered one part of the all important Seven Qualities Conducive to Enlightenment; aka, if you don’t have these then Enlightenment cannot happen…‼️

1. Saddha: Faith, Conviction, Belief; which controls doubt.
2. Viriya: Effort, Willingness to Do the Work, Persistence, Fortitude & Will-Power; which subdues laziness.
3. Sati: Mindful Awareness, the Ability to Bring to Mind / Remember to get something done; which diverts heedless-ness and recklessness.
4. Samādhi: the state of absorbed & focused calm alert concentration, The Zone; which conquers distraction and "monkeying-around"
5. Pañña (Sanskrit: prajña): Wisdom, Discernment, Understanding; which dispels ignorance, delusion, and foolishness. ⚡️

With these five powers combined you have the 'Pañca Bala'. 💪

What rings close to home for massage & bodywork practitioners on a day-to-day level is Viriya. Viriya is discussed as the 4 Right Efforts/Pursuits: 1. To cultivate new skillful - beneficial qualities and habits. 2. Maintain the skillful - beneficial qualities one has and is acquiring. 3. Abandon the unskillful - unbeneficial qualities and habits one has. 4. Guard against new unskillful - unbeneficial qualities from arising. 🔑

🚨Please read ‼️ It has been such an honor to connect with over the years. They are a true elephant sanctuary in Thailand and help to bring abused elephants back to health and reintroduce them to their natural habitat. With this post we honor the passing of MaeSriNoi, the matriarch of the sanctuary.

In 2012, we spent several nights in the forest with her and the mahouts (elephant keepers) as she was laboring. Several friends & students also came and shared in the experience. MaeSriNoi had a powerful yet sweet presence and the experience with her has forever changed our lives; not the least hearing the herd at night by the bonfire.

All money from the recent Thai Massage Refresher will be donated to Patara in honor of MaeSriNoi. If you did not attend the refresher but wish to make a donation, you can send funds directly to Patara via PayPal with the email [email protected]. Otherwise DM us to help support them.

Halloween is the Celtic holiday of Samhain for honoring and making offerings of food and drink to those who have passed, often made to ensure a safe journey through the dark winter months. 🥶 ❄️

In Thailand, offerings are made - often daily - for much the same purpose. Betel nut, betel leaf, food, and to***co are typical the traditional offerings to teachers and relatives of the past. This photo was taken at the famous Royal Temple of Wat Po at the foot of a statue of Dr. Jīvaka Kumarbhacca, the Father-Doctor of Traditional Thai Medicine. 🙏

All things begin with intention. 🧘‍♀️

We may have different ways of understanding intentions, yet one of the greatest tools for introspection into ourselves, our habits, and how we create anything in our lives is meditation. Wherever you find your inspiration be sure to make time to practice for yourself, especially before you practice on others. 🙏

10/22/2021

one of the greatest things we can do as practitioners of a healing art and science is to remember those who came before us, particularly our teachers, and to give back to them.🍎

In Thai culture this is one of the first things taught. For Thai Massage and Medicine, we give respects and thanks to Dr. Jīvaka Kumarbhacca as our “Father-Doctor”. Written on this red placard at the Jīvaka shrine in are the phrases most commonly practiced as a way to say “thank you” to him for practicing and sharing all he did. 🙏

This is a rare picture from the 1940's of a group of very special nuns from Wat Pak Nam Temple in Bangkok Thailand. can boast many things, one being the current Supreme Patriarch of Thailand as its Abbot. Perhaps more insightful, is that this was a place where both monks and nuns meditated, and the distinctions that took place related to levels of inner stillness, tranquility, and penetrating insight, not discrimination based on s*x.

These women were part of the famous โรงงารทำวิชชา "Meditation Workshop" in a secluded part of the temple, where teams would take shifts so that throughout a 24hr day not a minute would go without one team on. These nuns completely dedicated their lives to the practice meditation, and reached very deep profound success; attaining very high levels of realization.

Visit Wat Pak Nam Temple and you may meet some of the new generation, or - if you're lucky - meet one of the originals in this photo before they pass on.

Sigalovada Sutta: The Buddha's Advice to Sigalaka

Reusi Dat Ton "Rishi Self-Stretching" posture of the day:
Name: 6 directions
Breath: Vase Breath. Drawl breath in and down to retain in the belly, gently lift up / retract a**s to prevent breath/air escaping below, retain breath in belly during dynamic movement
Relieves: laziness, dullness of body & mind, general fatigue
Posture: Sit cross-legged -Vajrasana best - with hands in prayer at the heart.
1. Interlace the fingers and as you breath in, press the palm away from you, directly in front of you. Hold, observe the breath and observe it circulate. Exhale, release to hands at the heart.
2. Interlace the fingers and as you breath in, press the palm away from you, to the left. Hold, observe the breath and observe it circulate. Exhale, release to center with hands at the heart.
3. Interlace the fingers and as you breath in, press the palm away from you, to the right. Hold, observe the breath and observe it circulate. Exhale, release to center with hands at the heart.
4. Interlace the fingers and as you breath in, press the palm away from you, first downwards then arch up so your palms are outward and directly in line above your head. Hold, observe the breath and observe it circulate. Exhale, release so the base of the palms of the interlace hands rest on the crown. Take a Vase Breath here.
5. Interlace the fingers and as you breath in, press the palm away from you, and down towards the floor. Lift lift the head to look more upwards than straight ahead as you retain the breath in. Hold, observe the breath and observe it circulate. Exhale, release to center with hands at the heart.
6. Interlace the fingers behind you, palms towards you, and as you breath in, press the hands down away from you,and a little upwards. Hold, observe the breath and observe it circulate. Exhale, release hands down behind you, then to center with hands at the heart.
Perform 3,5,9 or 21 times.
This posture reminds me of the Sigalovada Sutta, where Lord Buddha gave a teaching to householders and make reference to the six directions; as well as how to honor each direction properly. Potentially it is something to recollect as one goes through the 6 directions, review one's current relationship with the people represented in each direction, and how to develop that relationship more beneficially.
Here are some websites to review and read up on the Sigalaka Sutta:
