A glimpse into our weekend 👀

Warning: the video is of a cadaver leg and may be difficult for some to view. You've probably heard of Upward Fixation of the Patella (UFP) otherwise known as "stifle lock". Many of us have seen a horse with it. This past weekend, during the dissection clinic taught by Trinity Equine Services, we were able to explore, hands on, how the patella locks and unlocks the hind limb. The horse's patella sits just above the stifle joint where the femur and tibia meet. The medial patellar ligament hooks over a notch in the femur when the horse is standing still which allows the horse to stand (or sleep) without muscular effort. If the ligament can't slide out of the notch-often due to weak quadriceps-the horse can't step foward, resulting in the leg stiffly being dragged out behind the horse. Asking the horse to back up can "unlock" the leg. The feel of locking and unlocking the patella in an educational setting such as this one, really increases the understanding of what happens when the horse experiences stifle lock.
