Be cautious of the title PhD, MD, or “Dr.” when someone speaks in absolutes outside their area of expertise. A credential establishes that someone has attained a particular level of education or training—it does not make them an authority on every subject.
Someone who specializes in optic nerve signaling, for example, may be highly qualified to discuss that field while having little or no specialized expertise in nutrition, supplementation, or clinical outcomes. If that person then promotes supplements and makes broad claims about their health benefits, the relevant question isn't “Do they have a PhD or MD?” It's “What evidence supports the claims they're making, and does their expertise actually apply to those claims?”
Credentials can establish expertise. They cannot substitute for evidence.
Detection of a 'chemical' does not equate to harm. Period.

𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝐀𝐥𝐤𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐖𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫 ‘𝐀𝐥𝐤𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐳𝐞’ 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐁𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐝?
Drinking ordinary alkaline water is not expected to meaningfully raise arterial blood pH. This claim also confuses pH with alkalinity. pH is logarithmic: a one-unit change in pH equals a tenfold change in hydrogen-ion concentration. Typical alkaline water is around pH 8–9, whereas gastric contents are around pH 1–3, especially after acid secretion. That several-unit gap represents a massive difference in free hydrogen-ion concentration. As an illustration, a pH 2 solution has 10^7—ten million—times more hydrogen ions than a pH 9 solution.
And that is before we even discuss quantity and buffering capacity. The pH printed on a bottle does not by itself measure how much base the water contains or how much acid it can actually neutralize. That capacity depends on the amount and type of dissolved base. In one study of five commercially available alkaline waters, the products had pH values ranging from 9.69 to 10.15, yet all contained less than 1 mEq/L of physiologic alkali (Piedras et al., 2024). The authors concluded that these products provided negligible alkali compared with potassium citrate and other urinary-alkalinization alternatives.
In the stomach, any acid-neutralizing effect of alkaline water would depend on its actual alkali load and its interaction with gastric contents—not on bottle pH alone. The commercial-product study did not measure gastric neutralization or blood-pH effects; it measured mineral composition and physiologic alkali content (Piedras et al., 2024). Any neutralization that occurs is ordinary acid–base chemistry, not evidence of detoxification.
The available clinical evidence does not establish alkaline water as a reliable way to raise blood pH, detoxify the body, prevent disease, or broadly improve health. A 2026 narrative review described the evidence as limited and context-specific and concluded that claims involving systemic alkalinization, immune enhancement, anti-aging effects, and disease prevention lack robust clinical support (Alebrahim et al., 2026). A 2025 review of human interventional and controlled studies reported only minor and inconsistent changes in acid–base markers and found no consistent performance advantage over other forms of hydration (Słyś & Łubianka, 2025).
There are, however, a few small studies worth acknowledging. Importantly, these studies examined hydrogen-rich water—not ordinary commercially available alkaline water. In a 2012 study, 19 healthy men consumed 2 L/day of hydrogen-rich water for seven days. The study was a one-group, pre–post design without a placebo group. Fasting arterial blood pH increased by 0.04, with a 95% confidence interval of 0.01–0.09 (Ostojic, 2012). The authors emphasized the study's short duration, small sample, lack of a placebo group, and uncertainty about whether the finding could be generalized to other individuals.
A subsequent randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study involved 52 physically active men, with 26 receiving hydrogen-rich water and 26 receiving tap water. Participants consumed 2 L/day for 14 days. The hydrogen-rich-water group had a 0.04 increase in fasting arterial blood pH and higher fasting bicarbonate compared with the control group (Ostojic & Stojanovic, 2014).
These findings suggest that small changes in blood pH have been reported under specific experimental conditions. They do not show that ordinary commercial alkaline water produces the same effect. The interventions involved hydrogen-rich water, not the five commercially available alkaline waters analyzed by Piedras et al. (2024). Nor do these studies establish that a small change in a physiological marker translates into a clinically meaningful health benefit.
Arterial blood pH is normally regulated within a narrow range, approximately 7.35–7.45. Buffers, ventilation, and renal acid–base handling work together to limit sustained changes in blood pH. Clinically important acidemia or alkalemia reflects a medical disorder requiring appropriate medical evaluation; it is not a wellness issue to be addressed by choosing a different bottled water.
In other words, even if you consume a small alkali load, your body does not simply permit your arterial blood pH to drift upward in a clinically meaningful way. Multiple physiological mechanisms work together to maintain acid–base homeostasis.
So, if you are paying extra for alkaline water because you think it will change your blood pH, detoxify your body, or make you “less acidic,” the evidence does not justify paying a premium for that physiological effect.

Mustard may provide sensory stimulation that could engage a cramp-inhibitory neural pathway, but direct evidence that mustard itself stops muscle cramps is lacking. Mustard contains pungent isothiocyanates, including compounds capable of activating transient receptor potential ankyrin 1 (TRPA1), a chemosensory channel expressed on sensory nerve endings. In principle, intense oral stimulation could engage afferent sensory pathways that modulate spinal motor-neuron excitability and potentially reduce the hyperexcitability associated with a muscle cramp (Craighead et al., 2016).
This mechanism is biologically plausible, but the human evidence is indirect. The relevant human experiments have generally tested mixtures of TRPA1/TRPV1 activators or proprietary formulations rather than commercial mustard. In one randomized, double-blind crossover study of 20 young adults, a mixed natural-extract formulation reduced electromyographic activity during voluntarily induced calf cramps, but it did not significantly shorten cramp duration. The finding is consistent with the possibility that oral TRP stimulation can influence cramp intensity, while leaving the effectiveness of mustard itself untested (Craighead et al., 2016).
The mustard-specific human study addressed a different question: whether mustard restores the physiological variables commonly assumed to contribute to exercise-associated cramps. After two hours of vigorous exercise, nine participants consumed a large dose of mustard containing approximately 1.5 g of sodium. During the following hour, mustard did not significantly change plasma sodium, potassium, osmolality, plasma volume, or plasma sodium content. Accordingly, the study did not support the explanation that mustard rapidly replaces the fluid or electrolytes lost during exercise (Miller, 2014).
That result argues against the familiar nutritional explanation, but it does not demonstrate that mustard has no acute effect. The study did not test participants who were experiencing cramps, nor did it measure whether mustard terminated an established cramp. The most defensible conclusion is therefore narrow: mustard could have a sensory-neural effect, but commercial mustard has not been shown in a controlled human trial to stop an established muscle cramp.
