Many people think a sauna is simply a room heated to a target temperature with a certain humidity.

It isn't.

Great sauna is orchestrated, not automated.

A thermostat can control temperature. A humidistat can measure moisture. But neither can create a truly exceptional sauna experience.

The human body continuously responds to changing thermal conditions. Comfort is not a fixed point—it is a moving relationship between air temperature, radiant heat, humidity, air movement, exposure time, and individual physiology. The Human Comfort Matrix shifts throughout every sauna session.

Helping bathers remain within that evolving comfort matrix is both a science and an art.

It requires thoughtful stove operation.

It requires understanding ventilation.

It requires knowing when—and how much—löyly to throw.

It requires reading the room and adjusting the environment as the session unfolds.

The quality of that orchestration also depends on the design of the sauna itself. Different stoves, stone masses, ventilation systems, room geometries, and construction details each create their own thermal character and possibilities.

At The Refinery, we view sauna operation as a craft.

We strive to become thermal artisans, carefully conducting each session rather than simply heating a room.

Over time, we also become Thermal Sommeliers.

Just as a wine sommelier helps guests discover the wines that best suit their palate, we help people discover their own thermal preferences.

Some prefer long, gentle radiant sessions.

Others enjoy intense bursts of löyly followed by deep recovery.

Some seek contrast.

Others seek endurance.

There is no single "perfect" sauna.

There is only the sauna experience that is perfectly suited to that individual, at that moment.

Our role is to help people develop a richer understanding of their own thermal palate, so they learn to recognize—and seek out—the kinds of sauna experiences that bring them the greatest benefit and enjoyment.

Just as it looks, this hot spring is located in the forest, so you must hike up to the hot springs. ♨️ The natural hot springs are collected and held in one large group pool and two other private tubs. All pools vary in temperature. 🏠 Clean Amenities- 1 restroom and 1 changing room are onsite. 🌿 Advanced Reservations Required! Book your visit months in advance, as they only allow 15 guests per day. I booked 4 months in advance. 🌲 Reserve Online- $20 required donation per person or $300 to reserve for the whole day. ⛔️ Reservations are enforced, as this is privately owned land. ❄️ The hot springs are open year around. Be prepared for all weather conditions, especially deep snow. 🥾Microspikes, poles, and snowshoes are required. As an experienced "Thermal Connoisseur" I have been invited to be one of the speakers at Sauna Days this year.

I look forward to delving into some of the myths and wives' tales about saunas and exploring the science behind optimizing sauna experiences across different styles of thermal bathing.

Examining many of the heritage saunas in operation for 100+ years helps us to understand the underlying wisdom of the ages behind various thermal bathing cultures.

Modern urban saunas are often optimized for export and commercial profits rather than heritage style performance.

Lots of marketing hype is displacing legitimate technical help in regards to sauna design.

Leveraging my education in both physiology and engineering, I hope to help generate some clarity as it pertains to the underlying science behind thermal bathing practices.
