🌿🌿🌿Cottonwood is our Herb of the Week! 🌿🌿🌿
Besides modulating inflammation, decreasing pain, and having preservative qualities, cottonwood is also known for being strongly antimicrobial.
It’s unlikely that humans were the first to discover this property of cottonwood. Indeed, bees have been capitalizing on cottonwood’s gifts for time immemorial.
In my northern latitude, honey bees hunker down for the winter, finally emerging with the first warm days of spring. Their first trips out of the hive are to the riverside to gather resins from the cottonwoods. They mix these resins with their own enzymes and then use this highly antimicrobial glue to line their hive. We call this thick sticky glue propolis.
Scientists in Turkey did an interesting study comparing propolis from 6 different locations. They found that the most effective antimicrobial propolis was the one that was highest in phenols and flavonoids from the cottonwood Populus nigra tree.

Sorghum is an ancient super grain that’s gaining popularity because it’s . But few people appreciate its sky-high content of : the red variety has triple that of blueberries while the black variety has 4.7-fold more. Sorghum’s true power, however, may be its unique proteins which researchers have discovered are highly toxic to cancer cells. In one recent study, sorghum proteins inhibited the growth of human breast cells by 90% and liver cancer cells by 78% in a test tube. Best of all, this ancient grain has indeed been linked to lower risk in people. An older study from China found that villages where sorghum / millet intake was higher had about 65% less throat cancer death.

So, how well do you know hyssop?🤔
"Like many mint family plants, hyssop can be used to promote digestion, especially stagnant digestion in which food feels stuck and heavy. It can be taken as a tea to promote digestion, as part of a bitters blend or even used as a food spice.
Hyssop has a strong pungent taste with hints of camphor. It will give a distinctive taste to your culinary dishes. Start with very small amounts to avoid transforming a delicious dish into a 'medicinal' dish." -Rosalee of Herbs with Rosalee
