Ariana teased #TheLightIsComing with a 21-second Instagram clip in May 2018, before premiering a longer preview at Wango Tango on June 2, where she confirmed the song would drop alongside the Sweetener album pre-order on June 20. Nicki Minaj wrote her verse, while Grande co-wrote the track with #PharrellWilliams, who also produced it.

The song debuted at No. 95 on the #BillboardHot100, selling 14,000 copies in its first week and reaching No. 22 on the Digital Songs chart. Although it dropped off the #Hot100 shortly after, it re-entered and peaked at No. 89 following the full album’s release. Internationally, it reached No. 24 in Hungary, No. 22 in Scotland, and entered the top 100 in several other countries, peaking at No. 63 in Canada and No. 57 in the UK.

Despite not being an official single, a music video premiered twelve hours after the song’s release through Reebok’s website. Directed by #DaveMeyers —who also helmed the #NoTearsLefttoCry visual—the video continued the album’s moody, cinematic aesthetic.
