You know that saying, “all dressed up with no place to go”?

Well, if I’m being honest that’s exactly how the boutique has been for months now. Foot traffic on this bright corner has always been sketchy, but it’s been a very disappointing and might I add insulting holiday season so far. Despite best efforts, my anniversary weekend was flat, I gave up 120+ hours of time with Baron to be at a store that saw 10 customers total (outside of friends and family that packed the room on Small Business Saturday— thank you 🖤), so if you’re wondering why I’ve decided to close the boutique to in-person shopping THAT is the reason. I can’t afford to pay staff to work hours without sales, and I am no longer willing to be away from my family without at least being able to go home with something to show for it.

I’ve been talking to a lot of people over the past week about the harsh realities of the state of small business lately— from my suppliers to the mail carrier, and everyone in between. 2022 has been harder than any other year I have had, and when I talk to other retailers or makers I learn that we are all suffering but no one wants to talk about it.

I have no choice but to talk about it, because when you can’t pay the bills and can’t sleep at night or be in a positive state of mind because of it all- suffering in silence just leads you down paths of self-destruction.

I’m sure this is so not a cool thing to post coming from the list-making, award-winning, media-loved girl with a brand that’s so well-loved— but I have to tell you, I’m heartbroken. Almost 9 years I have poured my heart and soul into this brand, for 2.5 years I have come into this space full of excitement and energy, and now all I do is sit here holding back tears because it’s so lonely. The only bright spot of the day is when the kids come in after school, and I feed off of their hope and energy as they learn a skill brings them joy.

The moral of the story is that lists and mentions and awards don’t pay the bills and don’t feed my soul. Real customers making real purchases and spending real time shopping local and making connections are what’s important, and what’s so badly needed.

Did you know that pregnant women were the reason our body butter blew up? Yup. Back in 2015 I decided to make some of my body butter as Christmas gifts for my coworkers. We had about three pregnant women in the office at that time and they kept coming back for more. Our blend of butters and oils soothed the itching and moisturized their stretching skin. Word got out and more moms to be reached out for butter. 🤰🏽🤰🏼I had to increase my supply of materials and said, “hey I might as well turn this into a business.” Pre Marsh + Mane it was called Real. Hair & Body Butter. ♥️
