We always had fir trees at Christmas. Dad said the needles were soft and they wouldn’t poke our little hands. It’s true! Spruce needles are sharp and you need to be careful when hanging ornaments. I still prefer a fir for its soft needles, but also for its very particular fresh-from-the-forest scent that greets you when you walk in the room. Balsam fir cranberry soap switches on all of my Christmas memories. I found myself humming “O Christmas Tree!” while I was pouring it. I think that’s a sign of a good holiday soap, don’t you? And by the way, those cute little wood curls—I made them from last year’s Christmas tree. It doesn’t get more genuine than that.
