At the time of the first Thanksgiving, it’s said that both the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag people enjoyed the sweet gift of honey—nature’s original dessert. While their feast looked very different from our modern Thanksgiving dinner, honey was one of the simple, golden treats they both understood and appreciated. You can almost picture it: a cool autumn day, a shared meal, and a drizzle of wild honey adding a little extra magic to the moment, reminding everyone at the table that even in a rugged new world, some things—like sweetness—were universal.

WERE BAAAAACK!

Did you know there’s such a thing as zombie bees? These aren’t creatures from a horror movie—they’re real honeybees that fall victim to a parasitic fly called Apocephalus borealis. The female fly sneaks up on a bee and lays her eggs inside its body. After a few days, the infected bee starts acting strange—leaving the hive at night, flying in circles under lights, and stumbling around like, well, a zombie! Eventually, the larvae hatch inside and crawl out of the bee, continuing the eerie cycle. Scientists study zombie bees to understand how parasites can hijack animal behavior—and to figure out if these tiny terrors could affect bee populations. It’s a real-life case of nature gone undead! 🧟🐝

America the bee-utiful

Happy 4th of July!! To celebrate the day of independence and also commemorate the hard work that bees put in every day for us to have beauty in this world and delicious food at our tables, lets talk about their history and role in our country!

To kick things off bees have been kept for over a thousand years! Starting with the ancient egyptians all the way through the dark ages! And this tradition certainly did not stop there. In Europe bee keeping continued to grow and become more practiced as the years went on. In America the Native tribs did not have the common honey bee we see today (Apis Melliphera) but instead harvested honey from other stingless species of bees. When colonizers came to America they brought with them the honey bee and started the tradition of bee keeping in America.

Even our founding father George Washington him self kept bees in Mount Vernon due to his love for the insect and of course for honey. Other founding fathers like Thomas Jefferson also kept bees. So next time you see a bee just think they could be descendents of the bees kept by our founding fathers!

Fun Fact Friday #2!

Have you ever wonderd what bees see? Or how they find flowers so well? Bee eyes are a biological marvel. To start off their eyes are coverd in hairs to keep the pollen off of them. And they have thousands of tiny lenses that are called ommatidia. The lenses allow the bees to see a wide range of colors which also includes ultraviolet which is a color range that we humans cant even see! Their eyes are also extremely sensitive to movement. This gives the bees the upper hand in spotting flowers and other food sources, but also allows them to see predators such as crap spiders that camouflage in the flowers and wait for their pray to get close.

Although bees eyes are super indepth they are actually much simpler then our eyes. But their eyes are made up of many simple lenses that work together, this provides them with a wide view of the world. They have about a 280 degree feild of vision that allows them to see almost everything with out turning their body. On top of that bees can process information at lightning speed, even being able to recognize a color quicker then any other animal on this planet that we now about. Overall, bee eyes are a vital part of their anatomy and a testament to the power of nature. They have evolved over millions of years to help bees thrive in their environment.

I thought it would be fun to share some interesting facts about bees to help more people understand how truly amazing these little insect friends are to you, me, and to the world around us! To kick it off, let's talk about honey! Who doesn't love honey? If you think about it, bees are the only insect in the world that creates a product that is conventionally consumed by humans- us! No other insect creates a substance that humans consume at the same rate that we use honey. How fascinating is that?! So next time you taste the sweetness of honey, just remember that you are taking part in a wonderful phenomenon that comes from our friends the honey bees!
