After Student's Suicide, Teens Leave Encouraging Notes on Over 3,600 Lockers

[08/31/16]   I just watched a friend of Gene Wilder's talking about his death. He said he knew it was coming, he knew it. But the reality that he can't call him anymore, can't share life with him anymore- he wasn't expecting how much that would hurt knowing ahead of time that his friend was dying. That's so true, isn't it? Even when we know it's happening, the reality hits the first time you reach for the phone and have to stop yourself.

Bright Side

Recovering from a loss always means some reorganization of your life. I thought I'd share this illustration with some ideas for goals.

It's been a busy week. I hope yours has been positive in some ways. I've spent the last 2 days at the California Funeral Director's Association annual conference, listening to speakers who are focused on meeting the needs of families better. I had the opportunity to speak about getting families referrals to grief recovery support and doing it earlier. My message is always that folks, who are grieving need to know that what they are experiencing is normal, but grief land is foreign to all of us until we arrive there. We don't know what we need, so those helping us need to have the best options to offer. My day ended with this beautiful sunset over Redondo Beach.

[02/04/16]   Imagine a plant that's loved and fed and nurtured. Then the plant withers and dies. A new plant arrives and is visited and cared for and fed and loved intensively. Even though the other plant is missing, the new plant feels enveloped in caring. After 2 weeks the nurturing stops. Completely. The visitors disappear. The food stops. The talking and listening stops. The little plant is all alone.

How does the plant understand that it could be so cared about and nurtured, only to have it all go away?

Grieving people are that little plant. Their loved one dies. They have incredible support. Then the funeral is over, and suddenly the rest of the world goes back to normal life- but they can't find their way yet.

Of you are that plant, turn to us here. We'll support you in our community.
