Here are some OT recommended spoons for self-feeding. Each child has individual needs and may benefit from one spoon more than the other. Talk to your child's OT for specific recommendations.
Deep Scoop Nuby Spoon: Provides a deep bowl on the spoon to prevent spillage when scooping messy food such as cereal with milk.
Zoli Chubby Gummy Spoon: Used in preparation for spoon-feeding with an added gag guard attached.
Munchkin Toddler Spoon: Munchkin toddler spoon provides a metal bowl and child-size wide handle to assist with grasp.
Gootensils Dip Spoon: Best used when learning to use the spoon. Works best with yogurt-like textures or anything that sticks to the spoon. The shape allows the child to dip the spoon into food and bring to mouth while limiting the amount of food falling off the spoon.
Duo Textured Spoon: These spoons provide added texture to the spoon to promote lip closure and texture variation to food.
Swivel Spoon: This one is helpful for children who struggle to keep the spoon upright when feeding, it rotates so that the bowl of the spoon is always facing upwards.

It's important to provide specific feedback when your child does something positive! Rather than saying "good job," highlight what was done: "You cleaned up all your toys by yourself! That was awesome!"

April is OT Month! Pediatric OT focuses on helping children gain independence in everyday tasks. We focus on building skills needed for daily activities such as fine motor and bilateral coordination, oral motor, visual motor, and sensory processing. Some specific areas that we address are self-feeding, expanding diet, transitioning from purees to solids, grooming and hygiene, dressing skills, and handwriting.
Talk to your child's pediatrician if you are concerned about your child's independence or tolerance in any of these areas.
* Please note that handwriting is only covered by some insurances.
🐣Using things around the house like a broomstick, soup cans, towels, pillows, boxes, plastic bins, and step stools, you can create an obstacle course like this for your child to do at home! They can balance an egg on a spoon and try to complete the obstacle course without dropping it. This will work on their balance and coordination, and improve their ability to go up and down steps/stairs.
