Big news for the Lipedema community!
New ICD-10-CM codes for Lipedema have been accepted and, barring something out of the ordinary, are on track to take effect in October 2027.
The original application went to the CDC in 2020, and getting here took years of follow-up and persistence, especially by Dr. Karen Herbst, who presented cycle after cycle since then.
This is a breakthrough. Getting Lipedema-specific ICD codes in place in the US, as they have been in other countries for some time, has been one of our field's biggest goals for years. It was a top recommendation in the Lipedema Foundation's 2023 Research Roadmap (lipedema.org/roadmap), and the effort far precedes that.
These codes are vital for easing patient access to diagnosis and care, facilitating reimbursement, and enabling health records research at scale.
Congratulations and thank you to Dr. Herbst; to Dr. Thomas Wright MD FAVLS and the American Vein & Lymphatic Society for their early work; and to all the submitters, collaborators, and endorsers who made this happen.

Prenatal massage is a style of bodywork designed specifically for pregnant women. Pregnancy is a time when a women's body endure tremendous stress due to dramatic physical and emotional changes.
Using various technique , specially developed for the expecting mother, this massage can helps release the pain and discomfort experienced throughout pregnancy. The benefits are profound, including emotional support, the relief of joint pain due to extra weight and postural imbalance.
A typical massage session will last an hour, and because miscarriage is risky in that first trimester ( week 1 to 12) , only light massage can be done, with a recommendation of once a month for that trimester.
At RMM , we conduct an interview and do a pre treatment evaluation. We look for thrombosis, edema and do a Homan check .
À thrombosis check is when we look and feel for any hot swollen sites on the legs that may indicates thrombosis.
Homan check is when we are looking if there are some pain while doing dorsiflexion of the toes toward the knee and pitting edema check is when just above the ankle we press firmly for like 2 seconds and there is no color or identation fill return after 10- 30 seconds, these are big contraindications for massage!
Second trimester ( week 13 to 26), recommendation is to have a massage every two weeks.
Third trimester ( week 27 to end of pregnancy) it is suggested once a week.
Aromatherapy are safe after the first trimester...for some chosen essential oil.

THE LYMPHATIC SYSTEM & LIPEDEMA
Why your legs may feel heavier at night than they did in the morning.
The lymphatic system is part of your body’s natural drainage network. It helps move excess fluid, proteins, and waste products out of tissues and back into circulation.
In lipedema, this system can become overwhelmed.
As abnormal fat tissue grows, it may place additional stress on nearby lymphatic vessels. Over time, fluid can begin to accumulate between cells, contributing to symptoms such as:
🔹 Heaviness in the legs or arms
🔹 Swelling that worsens throughout the day
🔹 Tightness or pressure in the tissues
🔹 Fatigue and discomfort
🔹 Increased tenderness and pain
This does not mean the lymphatic system is failing. It means it may be working harder than normal.
Many people with lipedema notice:
✔ Legs that feel heavier by evening
✔ Difficulty standing for long periods
✔ Increased swelling during hot weather
✔ Temporary relief from elevation, movement, compression, or lymphatic support
Understanding the relationship between lipedema and the lymphatic system helps explain why symptoms can fluctuate from day to day.
Remember
Your body is not working against you.
Your lymphatic system may be carrying a heavier load than it was designed to handle.
Understanding is the first step toward better care and greater self-compassion.
