This was a fun project—out now on Kindle from APA LifeTools and next month in print!

It’s always an honor to read someone’s book manuscript. It feels like entering the hallowed halls of another person’s mind. It takes a lot of trust and vulnerability to allow an outsider into that space. 🧠 ✍️ 📚
And it is wonderful when I can play a role, however small, in the project’s success! In this case I was developmental editor.
Congrats to Diana Fosha, all the chapter authors, and to APA Books for this award from the American Association of Publishers.

What’s your favorite seasonal fruit or vegetable?
Once or twice a year I make a dessert that is on brand—featuring rhubarb! This time, rhubarb cherry shortbread bars. So good I didn’t stop to snap any pics of the final baked product. Oops.
Rhubarb likes cooler climates & I live in California’s northern Central Valley. It’s tomato 🍅 land here, soon I’ll be slurping tomatoes right over my kitchen sink!
For now, I’ll enjoy the rhubarb goodness while I can.

Happy Mothers Day! Name a woman in your life who has helped you grow. ❤️ (it’s ok if she never gave birth)

When your mind is just jumping around...maybe it’s time for a walk in the park or some other kind of break to get focused.
04/24/2021
I found two pairs of glasses while out on a walk today. One hanging from a fence and the other, several blocks away, hanging on a tree branch. Probably discovered on the ground and placed at eye level to help the one(s) seeking them find them more easily. 👓
I could use the moment to make a comment about finding your focus when you write, and how it can be helpful if someone else (like an editor) assists you with finding your focus, and so on. But yeah, glasses in a tree and on a fence. It was a fun find even with no metaphors or writerly lessons at all. @ Sacramento, California

Well. A few stupid and really kinda trashy things went down lately but, ha! Look what I found among the literal trash on my carpet 💜
Have you found anything heartening as you sorted through dirt and crumbs this week?

Let’s say you’re at that point where the piece you are writing could go one way or the other. ✏️
Does it veer towards popular science or self-help? Self-help or memoir? Memoir or interviews? When are you storytelling? When do you need to provide a critique?
And, if you recognize that you’re at a crossroads, well, which path should you take?
You don’t have to wander unmarked pathways all alone. You can find your focus, find the right path. 🥾
It might take reaching out for advice. It’ll cost money, time, and likely both. But your writing is worth it! You’ve already worked so hard. Don’t stop now!
Where the sun 🌞 hits the water and we see the rocky stream bed
Where it’s reflected back in flashes but doesn’t blind
Where the water flows fast, where it meanders 💦
Like water, your writing should move. It is alive, after all! If your needs another look to gauge its movement, clarity, and how well it connects with readers, I hope you’ll consider hiring a developmental ! 📚

What is the heart of your book?
What is it really about?
And, what aspects of it could ONLY have been written by you? (because you did the research, you lived the life, you created the thing)
It seems like an obvious question. It is simple but not always easy to identify the true heart of your work.
This is where a developmental editor can help! 💜

Please tell me what spinach would send in an email to you. I really, really want to know.
???
Technically, an infrared sensor detects chemical changes and alerts scientists (it can be used to detect landmines, pollution, and other phenomena)...but this is such a great headline.
~credit to my friend Rachel Morey for the above note on this article ^^^ I second her question
Scientists have taught spinach to send emails | Living It sounds too weird to be true, but engineers at MIT have developed nanotechnology which can be embedded in plants.
