So many Bruce's! In honor of Bruce, I contributed a design that will be printed on to T-shirts whose sales will fund a scholarship in his name at Major Chords for Minors. I can't think of a more fitting way to breathe continuous life into the memory and legacy of this special person, who was a friend to so many.
The top right pic shows the three available designs; please visit either The Virtual Redeye or Major Chords for Minors on FB for more info on how to getchu one!

Riverfront Saginaw

GIVEAWAY TIME. It’s cold and rainy and I know you’re inside eating pizza and binge watching Unsolved Mysteries, so let’s crush this giveaway with a twist.

First, some background.

Major Chords For Minors is a very special organization here in Saginaw that provides free music lessons to kids, as well as provides instruments and a supplemental source of income to area musicians and music student who serve as the teachers.

As you would expect, COVID has hit them hard and they recently suffered the loss of a beloved piano teacher, Bruce Leaman, whose stories filled our feed a couple weeks ago.

So, here’s the scoop: I’ve got two hats to give to two people who like/share this post and tag a friend in the comments.

But what would be even more amazing was if you enter, you would buy a hat anyway. You don’t have to, but it would be rad.

They’re $15 and available here: www.bit.ly/MajorChordHats. You’re also given the option to make a donation greater than the cost of the hat, which would be even more rad.

Here’s a chance to throw some goodness into the world, so let’s do this. Like/share the post, and tag someone in the comments. If you bought a hat, let us know that, too.

READ Association of Saginaw County

While COVID-19 has affected all of us, one of the most vulnerable populations that has been affected are seniors living in nursing homes. In the past, the READ Association has been able to brighten days each week by sending children on STARS buses to read to residents on a weekly basis. However, our READing STARS program will likely be suspended until next school year or when it is completely safe. During this time, these sweet souls have not been able to have any or limited time with visitors, even their families. We think we can help to bring smiles to many of these precious faces, but we need your help.

The READ Association will be accepting cards, letters, or children’s artwork on an ongoing basis throughout the year. At the end of each month, we will distribute whatever is received at our office to a nursing home(s) to distribute to seniors. If the response is abundant, we will divide them among as many places as possible. Schools that are meeting face-to-face are encouraged to have their students participate for an even greater impact. So please pick up a card or two and either send them to the READ Association (100 S. Jefferson Avenue, Suite #203, Saginaw, MI 48607), or drop them off at our office on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday from 9:00am-3:00pm.

Thank you for your help in making a positive difference during a difficult time. Please share with friends, families, schools, and organizations!😊❤️😊

Silky smooth gams, coming right up!
Note: This video was filmed pre-pandemic

Have you ever put a shirt on after having your back waxed? It’s kinda like putting on pants after waxing your legs. Sooo silky smooth! Not only does waxing last longer, it’s better for your skin and helps prevent ingrown hairs. By removing the hair from the follicle waxing lasts approximately 5-7 weeks before the hair is ready for another removal process. 🙌🏽

Awww ❤️

"I got into playing music because my grandfather was a bluegrass picker. I was really infatuated with his love for the instrument. He was an inspiration and the one who taught me everything I started playing when I was 12 years old, I just turned 38, so I’ve put some time in.

I started playing at White’s Bar when I was 16. I had some guitar teachers, and when they would perform there, they would let us sit in with them and we would come on earlier in the night. That’s where I grew up playing, that’s where all of my bands started off playing.

Nothing is as fun as playing in your homecourt, and White's is my homecourt. Every time we play there, they have to take all the tables and chairs out because they can’t fit all the people inside.

I moved to Nashville, TN and lived there for six years. I got my music degree there. I went to the School of Audio and Engineering and saw what was out there. A lot of the musicians were good, but a lot the stuff we have here is just as good, if not better. I moved back to Saginaw two years ago.

I always wanted to play at Ojibway Island. Have some local artists and musicians put on a show, and have local food trucks. Just for fun, just for the community.

Playing guitar is the most therapeutic thing I can do for myself. If I can get my music to people on a platform where they can enjoy it, and they can get a little bit of the same joy out of it that I get from playing it—that’s my number one goal. I don’t sit down with a pen and paper and try to figure out chord progressions. It’s more about how I’m feeling in that moment—when I pick up my instrument.

A person came up to me and paid me the nicest compliment, he said, ‘your music just makes me cry, it’s so beautiful.’

That’s why I do what I do."

My friend ❤️

"The day Bruce told me he had been in a group in high school that called themselves "The Invisible Sloths", I knew we'd be friends forever.

Before I even knew Bruce, I moved into a house across from a Church here in town with some friends. We had parties- and parties- and parties ... and conveniently though we didn't have much parking at our house, we had a church across the street to use.

Every Sunday morning we'd try our hardest to get cars out of their lot before service started, and nearly every Sunday we failed. There'd be this kind, friendly little note on the windshield of at least two abandoned vehicles asking to please not leave them there- we'd feel bad, leave a note on the entrance door apologizing yet again, and do our best the following week. Approximately two years later I met Bruce ... the man behind the friendly windshield letters.

I worked with Bruce through Major Chords For Minors from that day forward; he was family. I never understood how he relentlessly was late for work at the music studio ... we didn't open until 4pm! Nevertheless, for the first five years, Bruce was a tad bit late- every. single. day. but he'd always have his reused coffee cup from the Red Eye in his hand! It was a joke between us. When Bruce started showing up on time, or (gasp) early! I'd question what was wrong. One of my favorite things would be to sit outside of his room listening to him play the piano while he was waiting for his next student. He was a beautiful pianist. I could go on and on of with memories that will make me laugh, and cry, and laugh again.

Bruce had a way with everybody. He cared. He listened- he truly listened. He was loved- he was loved more than love could love itself. He never showed stress, or concern, or anxiety, or anything- he was cool as a cucumber. I'll always admire that, and aspire to be more like that. He had pranks, and jokes, and fun for days. I'll miss him every day, forever. He was the cats pajamas."

"I’ve known Bruce since we moved here when I was four years old and he was 10.

He looked like Father Time with that beard of his, we used to tease him about that. He really influenced all of us. I have so many memories: sitting on the patio at his parents’ house in the middle of the night or sleeping in tents in the back yard back in the 60s and early 70s.

He made pottery – I think he took some pottery classes at Delta College – and I remember going with him to a couple of small towns up north where he’d sell his pottery on occasion.
Bruce touched the life of every child who came to my house … all the kids just loved him. They were drawn to him. He was one of those kinds of people, you know? When Katrina and I made the decision to start this Major Chords for Minors, the first person I thought of to help was Bruce since we would be working with children.

In nine years, he served probably 1,200 kids and their families. That's another thing – parents just, you know, loved him almost as much as the kids.

Bruce was just so smart. He was one of the smartest people I’ve known in my life.
Mostly, he was a beautiful human being. I never heard him say a bad thing about anybody. He was a soft soul … he had a soft touch.

He was a coffee guy – right up until the end. He just loved going down to the Red Eye and drinking coffee … because he was a night owl. It wasn’t until seven o'clock at night that he’d start going out anywhere.

He was a very impressive dude, man. Just the greatest. He touched all of our lives.

The City of Saginaw awarded him a citizenship award a few months ago for his outstanding work in this community – under the radar work. Bruce definitely was not one of those pianists to step out on the stage at any time. He liked to be behind the scenes. He got to help those kids develop the talents that God gave them. It was pretty cool and I got a front-row seat to it.

How perfect is that? I went from four years old – getting to watch my buddy get this award, one of my best friends in the world, my neighbor. He was there for me almost my whole life.

Man, we had some laughs. I’m still laughing with him."

- John Vowell, Founder, President, and CEO of Major Chords For Minors

Bruce Leaman was a beloved piano teacher who passed away last week. All this week, we'll be featuring photos and comments from people who worked with or were taught by Bruce.
