May 25th is International Plastic Free Day!

For 24 hours we’re challenged to stay sustainable;
-Ditch plastic utensils and drink cups!
-Buy in bulk to reduce plastic packaging, or abstain altogether and bring your own reusable containers and bags.
-Carry a reusable coffee mug or drink tumbler with reusable straws.
-Find everyday swaps to live more sustainably like mesh produce nets instead of single-use plastic bags.
-Make a plan with your friends and family to make easy, sustainable swaps in your home!

African Americans founded Decoration Day (later known as Memorial Day) on May 1st, 1865 in Charleston, South Carolina. In the final year of the Civl War, the Confederate Army turned Washington Race Course into an open-air prison where over 250 Union soldiers were buried in a mass grave. After the war, formerly enslaved people and black Union troops exhumed the bodies, gave proper burial, and around 10,000 predominantly black and formerly enslaved people marched a parade around the racetrack singing hymns, reciting scripture, and decorating the graves.

Today, we remember those lost; to war, to racism, and to erasure.
