September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month.

Ovarian cancer may cause nonspecific symptoms, such as abdominal swelling or pain, or no symptoms at all. Further, no screening tests to date have been shown to decrease the rate of death from ovarian cancer. As a result, ovarian cancer often goes undetected until it has reached an advanced stage. The five-year relative survival rate is 50.9%.

About 1.1% of women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer at some point in their lifetimes, according the NCI’s Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program. Approximately 19,680 women in the United States will receive a diagnosis of ovarian cancer in 2024, according to SEER estimates. Furthermore, approximately 12,740 women will die from the disease.

Family history and inherited gene mutations such as BRCA1 and BRCA2 are among the risk factors for ovarian cancer. Others include obesity, endometriosis, and the use of hormone replacement therapy.

This year alone, nearly 20,000 women will be diagnosed with this terrible disease.

When a woman is diagnosed at the earliest stage, her chance of surviving ovarian cancer for five years or more doubles from just 46 per cent to more than 90 per cent.

There are a number of tests that can help diagnose ovarian cancer, including:

Transvaginal ultrasound
A screening test that can find 80–100% of ovarian cancers, but can't always distinguish between ovarian cancer and other conditions

CA-125 blood test
A test that measures the level of CA-125 in the blood, a biomarker that may indicate the presence of ovarian cancer or other conditions

Pelvic exam
A rectovaginal pelvic exam can help find or rule out ovarian cancer

CT scan
A CT scan uses X-rays to create 3D images of the pelvis, abdomen, and lymph nodes to see if cancer has spread

MRI
An MRI can be used to detect tumors or recurrences in other areas of the body

Laparoscopy
A procedure that uses a thin tube and camera to examine the ovaries and other pelvic organs

Laparotomy
A procedure that uses a larger incision to examine the ovaries and other pelvic organs

Biopsy
A procedure that involves removing a small sample of tissue or fluid from the ovaries to examine under a microscope

Genetic testing
A test that looks for mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes

A biopsy is the only way to confirm a diagnosis of ovarian cancer.
