I think the real reason nurses are so angry about the Department of Education removing us from the professional occupation list is that it feels like yet another insult after years of giving everything we have.

We spent years in school tackling brutal coursework, clinical hours, exams, and boards most people outside healthcare don’t even know exist. We manage medications, IV drips, emergencies, critical decisions, and real human lives—while handling unsafe patient loads, chronic short staffing, and emotional stress few ever see.

We work 12-hour shifts that stretch into 14. We miss meals and holidays. We carry trauma, loss, and heartbreak home, then try to function like everything is fine.

So when “professional” is taken away from nursing, it hurts—because nurses have fought for years to be recognized, respected, and taken seriously in a system that depends on us. We advocate relentlessly, not just for patients, but for ourselves.

This isn’t about a title.
It’s about the message behind it.

If we can remove “professional” from the people who keep healthcare running, what does that say about this country’s priorities?

Nurses aren’t angry without reason. They’re exhausted from being treated like they don’t matter—and eventually, enough will be enough.

I remember this girl… full grown adult, but still such a baby. A baby nurse. I’m such a believer in growth as humans, as nurses, as clinicians, as students and as teachers.
I am currently in my Advanced Practice Provider journey and it’s amazing, scary, fulfilling, rewarding, stressful, and in many ways… “about time.”
I look at this picture and I hope this girl is proud of me.

HOT TOPIC ALERT! 🚨
Found this on one of my NP group pages…

This whole debate is ridiculous.
MD= Doctor of Medicine
DO= Doctor of Osteopathy
DDM= Doctor of Dental Medicine
DDS= Doctor of Dental Surgey
DNP= Doctor of Nursing Practice

Would you walk into the office and say Hi, Kathy! to any of these except DNP? ASK YOURSELF WHY.

After 10+ years of education alongside 10 years of practice, I WILL use the title I have earned. You don’t hear, I’m John, the osteopath. They say I’m Dr Smith. The letters on their lab coat say DO. Chiropractors with much less training who ARE NOT PHYSICIANS call themselves Doctor. So hell yes, I will say I’m Dr. Calderon, because I’m no longer a mid level nurse practitioner, I’m a DOCTOR OF NURSING PRACTICE.

I do not care if the MDs of the world have their egos hurt. I know my scope of practice. My lab coat will clearly say Doctor of Nursing Practice. I will not portray myself as a medical physician.

We all better start standing up for what we have earned if we want to be respected. We do the same work clinically for half the pay.

And no, I don’t have to go to medical school if I want to play Doctor. I entered this field with this goal because I prefer the Nursing model of patient care. DOs didn’t go to medical school. They went to osteopathy school. Dentists went to dental school.

Quit dumbing down our profession.

AI says… “Thank you for your hard work and dedication.” You can also express your appreciation for their compassion and care, and acknowledge the positive impact they have on patients’ lives. For a more detailed expression of gratitude, you could say, “Thank you for your exceptional care and for always putting your patients first.”
Here are some more specific options:
Simple and direct: “Thank you for everything you do.”
Acknowledging dedication: “I really appreciate your hard work and dedication to patient care.”
Highlighting compassion: “Your compassion and empathy have made a world of difference.”
Expressing gratitude for specific care: “Thank you for the excellent care you provided during my stay.”
General appreciation: “I am so grateful for everything you do for patients.”
Emphasizing positive impact: “Your positive attitude and care have made a real difference.”
A heartfelt expression: “Words can’t express my gratitude for your dedication.”
Focusing on their skills: “Your knowledge and expertise are truly appreciated.”
Acknowledging their efforts: “Thank you for all the hours you dedicate to our care.”
Expressing your admiration: “I admire your courage and commitment.”
Thanking for their presence: “Thank you for being there for us during difficult times”

Thank you is enough.
We are still here- Still fighting for you, still caring for you, and still advocating. We appreciate being seen.
