Non-toxic Makeup & Skincare Some experts estimate that, depending on the substance, our skin can absorb up to 60% of whatever we slather on it. Um - ew!?
In a way, we are eating through our skin. Not a problem if the stuff you're putting on there is edible. But with little government regulation and pressure from buyers to make affordable, wrinkle-fighting, magic-working, vibrantly colored cosmetics, the ingredients in many of our beloved makeup items are pretty toxic. According to the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, "Major loopholes in U.S. federal la
w allow the cosmetics industry to put unlimited amounts of chemicals into personal care products with no required testing, no monitoring of health effects and inadequate labeling requirements. In fact, cosmetics are among the least-regulated products on the market." The Environmental Working Group's Cosmetics Database ("Skin Deep") warns, "Some companies use ingredients that may cause cancer or that are associated with developmental problems." I can't believe I got to my 30s before learning this. My blog, www.pretty-healthy.com, features research, reviews and DIY tricks for safe skincare and cosmetic products in order to find some that are still effective AND gorgeous! Thanks for joining me!
