Healthy snack idea to amplify flavors: gluten-free toasts with pumpkin seed butter, tahini and blueberry jam (or healthy topping of your choice). It’s often hard to come up with healthy snack ideas, this is a wonderful option and can be made in little time! I often recommend it to my clients.

As per last weeks post, foods high in FODMAPS(fermentable oligo-, di-, monosaccharides, and polyols) can be disruptive for those with sensitive guts or gut issues. Soy is often hidden in breads, monitoring my food products and knowing what goes into them, helps me avoid food intolerance or sensitivity troubles and gut troubles. Food intolerances can be caused by a number of things including, sensitivity to certain parts of foods and even a lack of digestive enzymes which help to digest and absorb that particular food.

This client had been gaining a few pounds each year since she turned 30 and it added up. Hormones are an important key and insight into understanding our bodies. Who else can say that they’ve had a whole slew of gut issues and other nutrition-related issues?

🥦For me it started with anemia after going vegan in high school. I didn’t have the proper knowledge to supplement.

🥛It didn’t end there, next l was diagnosed with IBS and became aware that I was lactose intolerant. Gut issues became the norm.

🥨I had a food allergy to soy that catapulted me into all types of discomfort, and uncovered many food sensitivities. I knew it was time to take action and focus on healing.

🙏🏻That healing process brought me to being a dietitian. You are not alone with your discomfort, if you are not aware of the causes, as you can tell from my story there can be many! I now live in a state of gut health freedom, l hope that gives you hope.

Here are 6 common food sensitivities! Other common sensitivities are: sulfites, fructose, eggs, aspartame, yeast, and food coloring. ⁠

Common sensitivity responses to dairy include: pain, bloating, nausea, diarrhea and gas. ⁠

Common responses to gluten include: all of the above, plus headaches, fatigue, rashes, joint pain, anemia and/or depression. ⁠

Common responses to caffeine include: insomnia, jitters, anxiety, nervousness, restlessness, and fast heartbeat. ⁠

Salicylates are chemicals produced by plants in response to stresses from invasion etc. They are found in a wide range of whole plant-based foods. Sensitivity responses include: stuffy nose, sinus infections, and hives. ⁠

Bacteria produce amines during food processes like fermenting. Amines are found in fermented foods, dried fruits, cured meats and more. Some symptoms of amine intolerance are: low blood pressure, anxiety and headaches. ⁠

FODMAPs/fermentable oligo-, di-, mono-saccharides and polyols are a members of short-chain carbs that cause digestive issues. They're found in apples, cheese, beer, beans, bread, lentils, garlic etc. Common symptoms include: bloating, gas, constipation, pain, and diarrhea. ⁠

An MRT test, referenced in a previous post this week, can allow you to isolate which foods you have sensitivities to! There's a good chance that you might be suffering without knowing that your chronic sinus infections or skin rashes come from food sensitivities! ⁠
