Recovering from an injury requires a lot from your body. Many people know of the benefits of completing physical therapy after surgery, but did you know that therapeutic massage can also greatly aid in your recovery?

Read our recent article to learn more about therapeutic massages!

One of the earliest therapeutic tools used to relieve pain, massage therapy can be used to treat numerous conditions, such as musculoskeletal disorders and injuries. By manipulating both superficial (close to the skin) and deeper muscle layers and connective tissue, therapeutic massage can elicit several positive results:

➊ Improved joint range of motion and enhanced function of the injured area
➋ Decreased pain and muscle reflex reactions
➌ Ensures better flow of oxygen and nutrients to injured area
➍ Accelerated healing through proper lymphatic drainage
➎ Increased relaxation (body and mind)
➏ Shortened recovery time
➐ Reduced scar tissue formation

If you are injured, massage therapy can be just what you need to ensure a fast recovery. An orthopedic massage with our team can be a great way to promote healing and reduce pain and soreness from a recent injury or surgery.

To start your journey to recovery, contact Arthritis & Sports in Sterling, VA to schedule your individualized massage today!

Weight-bearing exercise is essential for building and maintaining healthy bones and muscles.

Weight-bearing exercises = any activity you do that works your muscles and bones against gravity (think walking, jogging, dancing, sports – even walking up stairs!)

During weight-bearing exercise, bone adapts to the impact of weight and the pull of muscle by building more bone cells, making them stronger and denser. Increased muscle mass also allows muscles to better protect bones which helps reduce the risk of osteoporosis.

Weight-bearing exercises have several health benefits:
☑ help prevent osteoporosis & improve/reduce arthritis symptoms
☑ help boost metabolism & aid weight loss as the body burns more calories
☑ help lower blood pressure & cholesterol
☑ improve balance, coordination & flexibility which will help protect joints

There are many types of weight-bearing exercises so find one that you enjoy & get to it!

Does your young child dream of becoming the next big Olympic star or pro athlete?

While you might share those goals, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) reminds parents to take a common-sense approach to sports training.

For those with severe hip arthritis, your doctor may suggest hip replacement surgery. This highly successful surgery involves replacing portions of the hip joint with prostheses (implants). For those with severe hip arthritis, your doctor may suggest hip replacement surgery. This highly successful surgery involves replacing portions of the hip joint with prostheses (implants).

The hip is a ball-and-socket joint made up of the femoral head (the ball at the top of your femur) and the acetabulum (the socket of your pelvis). During surgery, your surgeon skillfully removes the worn out or damaged sections of your hip and replaces them with artificial implants.

𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗸𝗲𝘁 ➟ durable plastic cup, sometimes with a metal shell
𝗕𝗮𝗹𝗹 ➟ metal or ceramic ball attached to a metal stem (inserted into the top of your femur)

There are three different types of hip replacement surgery:
𝗧𝗼𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: the ball and socket are both replaced
𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: only the ball is replaced
𝗥𝗲𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴: the ball is shaved down and capped, versus being completely removed

There are also two different ways to approach the hip during surgery:
𝗣𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿: approach from the back (most common method)
𝗔𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿: approach from the front (muscle-sparring technique)

A recent article in the Washington Post discussed BMI’s controversial effectiveness. Many experts debate its effectiveness for people of all races and ethnicities — and criticize how it has become overinterpreted as a catchall proxy for body fat, nutritional status and health risk.

Luckily for our patients, Arthritis & Sports offers a far better solution. DEXA scans is today’s established standard for registering fat and lean mass distribution throughout the entire body.

In simple terms, our DEXA machine is capable of detailing overall and regional measures of fat mass, lean mass, and bone mass all in one quick session!

As we age, so do our joints.

Normally, well-functioning joints will glide and move freely thank to the lubricating synovial fluid that surrounds the joint. This fluid acts as a lubricant and shock absorber for the joints.

For those suffering from osteoarthritis, the hyaluronic acid in the synovial fluid in your knee joint has become diluted and broken down, reducing its natural properties.

This causes a vicious cycle: inflammation degrades cartilage ➔ pain receptors begin firing even during normal movement ➔ you start limiting movement to prevent pain ➔ lack of movement causes further deterioration of the joint ➔ symptoms become progressively worse

The solution? A nonoperative procedure called viscosupplementation, which provides the joints with synovial fluid for lubrication. This restore the joint’s cushioning and shock absorption.

Hundreds of our patients have had great success with this in-office procedure. See if this can help restore your quality of life today!
