On World Afro-Day i decided to write “A Love Letter to My Hair, Rosita 💜”

For 57 years, you’ve stayed with me through every transformation.

I relaxed you until my scalp burned. I bleached you, colored you, overheated you, straightened you—and kept asking you to become something you were never meant to be. I treated your natural beauty like a problem to solve, even when every strand was quietly asking to be loved.

And still, you stayed.

Even through the damage, the breakage, and the moments when I barely recognized you, you held on. You carried me through changing seasons, changing bodies, and changing ideas of beauty.

As my body and hormones changed, so did you. You returned with a new texture, a new personality, and a beautiful sense of rebirth. At first, I didn’t know what to do with you. I wanted the old familiar version back. But slowly, I began to see you—not as something to control, but as someone to meet again.

Somewhere along the way, I stopped asking, “How can I change my hair?” and started asking, “How can I love her?”

Now I cherish every curl, coil, gray strand, and imperfection because each one tells our story. They remind me of what we endured, what we released, and how beautifully we found our way back to ourselves.

Rosita, I’m sorry it took me so long to understand you.

Thank you for surviving me.
Thank you for growing with me.
Thank you for returning to me, even after all the ways I tried to change you.
Thank you for teaching me that I never needed to change my crown to be beautiful.

I only needed to learn how to love the crown I was given. 👑💜
