Recent research suggests that eating ultra-processed foods could contribute to flare-ups of psoriasis. Scientists analyzed data from over 18,500 adults in France, aged 62 to 70, looking at self-reported diets and psoriasis symptoms. They found a strong link between higher consumption of ultra-processed foods and active cases of psoriasis, even after adjusting for factors like age, body weight, alcohol intake, and other health conditions.
Ultra-processed foods often contain refined sugars, unhealthy fats, additives, and low fiber, all of which can promote systemic inflammation. This inflammation may trigger or worsen psoriatic flare-ups. Experts also point out that these foods can disrupt the gut microbiome, increasing gut permeability and allowing toxins to enter the bloodstream, which amplifies immune responses. In addition, high intake of ultra-processed foods is associated with obesity and metabolic problems, which are independent risk factors for psoriasis.
However, some experts note that the study’s findings were significant only for self-reported psoriasis cases and not for those confirmed by dermatologists, suggesting that more rigorous research is needed. Nutrition appears to interact with genetic predisposition, potentially accelerating the onset or severity of psoriasis in susceptible individuals.
