For those with severe knee arthritis, your doctor may suggest knee replacement surgery. This highly successful surgery involves resurfacing your damaged knee with artificial components (implants).

Your knee is separated into three main compartments: medial (inside of the knee), lateral (outside of the knee), and patellofemoral (front of the knee). During surgery, your surgeon skillfully removes the worn out or damaged sections of your knee, replacing up to three boney surfaces while leaving healthy joint surfaces and stabilizing ligaments intact:

𝗙𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗻𝘁 ➟ grooved component curved around the end of the femur (thighbone)
𝗧𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗻𝘁 ➟ a flat platform attached to the top of the tibia (sometimes with a metal stem inserted into the center of the tibia bone, and often with a plastic articular surface)
𝗣𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗻𝘁 ➟ dome-shaped piece of polyethylene that mimics the shape of the back of the patella (kneecap)

There are two main types of knee replacement surgery:
𝗧𝗼𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: all of the compartments of the knee are resurfaced with metal and plastic devices
𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 (𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹) 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: just one of the compartments of the knee is resurfaced (inside or outside)

Whether you are a highly-trained athlete or a weekend warrior, physical therapy can improve performance in just about any activity or workout. Here are a few ways physical therapy can improve your sports performance:

𝟭. 𝗙𝗹𝗲𝘅𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆: Physical therapists can identify where mobility may be limited. By increasing your range of motion and flexibility, you’ll be better protected against injuries while also being able to move painlessly.

𝟮. 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵 and 𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿: While the strength of every muscle is important, physical therapy aims to target those areas that you rely on most so you can bring your best to every game and match.

𝟯. 𝗘𝗻𝗱𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲: While a few PT sessions won’t get you from your couch to your first marathon, physical therapists can help strengthen and improve the functionality of muscles, and even help figure out why certain muscles cramp or become fatigued.

𝟰. 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝗚𝗮𝗶𝘁: By simply watching you walk and run, your physical therapist can determine what you need to do to improve your movement efficiency and prevent future injuries.

𝟱. 𝗕𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲: Don’t underestimate the importance of developing your stability and control. Better balance means you’ll be able to hold your positions, stand your ground, and pull off those complicated plays easily and efficiently.

𝟲. 𝗜𝗻𝗷𝘂𝗿𝘆 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Preventative treatments are as important as having the right gear. The key is to find and correct things like muscle imbalances and flexibility issues before they can cause injuries while playing.

Physical therapy is a useful tool for athletes of all levels. From newbies to pros, Arthritis & Sports Physical Therapy is here to help keep you in the game. Give us a call today to schedule your first visit!

Fireworks are a staple for Fourth of July celebrations in the U.S. The thrill of fireworks, however, can be dangerous.

🎆 Between June 21 and July 21, over 11,000 fireworks-related injuries occurred in 2019.
🎇 On average, 230 people visit the emergency room every day with fireworks-related injuries in the weeks around the 4th of July.
🎆 Over 40% of all fireworks-related injuries involve the arm, hand, or fingers. Fireworks can also cause serious injuries to your eyes.
🎇 Sparklers can burn at about 2,000 degrees, hot enough to melt metal!
🎆 Fewer than 6% of firework injuries occur in public displays.

While the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH) encourages you to attend public fireworks displays, which are monitored for safety by a local fire department, here are some fireworks safety tips to follow while setting off fireworks at home:

❎ Never allow young children to play with or ignite fireworks. If older children are playing with fireworks, always have adult supervision.
❎ Avoid buying fireworks that are packaged in brown paper. This is often a sign that the fireworks were made for professional displays and could be dangerous.
❎ Never place any part of your body directly over a fireworks device when lighting the fuse. Back up to a safe distance immediately after lighting fireworks.
❎ Never try to re-light or pick up fireworks that have not ignited fully.
✅ Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose handy in case of fire.
❎ Never carry fireworks in a pocket or shoot them off in metal or glass containers.
✅ After fireworks complete their burning, douse it with plenty of water from a bucket or hose before discarding it to prevent a trash fire.

An orthopedic doctor is an integral part of a healthcare team, as this doctor plays a large role in the rehabilitation of a variety of injuries.

An orthopedist (also referred to as an orthopedic doctor, orthopedic physician, or orthopedic surgeon) treats a variety of conditions which relate to the musculoskeletal system. Conditions involving direct trauma or repeated trauma due to overuse of a bone, joint, muscle, or tendon will benefit from treatment by an orthopedist.
