My journey in soap making.

To begin the soap making journey one must dive into the research! You need to learn about the oils and what they add to a recipe, you need to understand the math behind the amount of lye to soaponify your oils, and of course you learn so much about your additives like colors, fragrance, and such!! I started my education by following soap makers like Katie from Royalty Soaps and Ellen Ruth! Plus I also have read a ton. Did you know you can use your local library to read all about soap making?

Castile soap dates back to the 11th century first made in France. Made of pure saponified olive oil. It has a gentle lather that is even more gentle on the skin. The biggest draw back that these bars have to cure for 6-12 months which is longer than my 4-6 weeks. These bars even took 4 days just to get out of the mold! Will I be able to wait that long to try it out? I added a touch of goat milk, sugar and tussah silk to round out the bar so I'm not sure.

Today is national soapmaking day! So I decided to do a soap I've been planning for a friend's birthday that is coming up. I took a picture before I finished putting the toppings on. Can anyone guess what embed I used and what is going on top? Bonus points if you get the smell right!

Talking about unexpected turn of events during soaping did you know fragrances that have vanilla in it can turn your soap brown? I like to call it Villianin 👹 because it can be evil if you forget about it. When I poured this soap the batter was nice and white. During the cut it was yellow... now it's brown. Can you figure out what part I put the fragrance in? Also my tree looks more like a boot so my daughter has named this bar Pumpkin Kicker. Fragrance with Autumn Leaves this bar is filled with goodness. Starting with goat milk, aloe vera, tussah silk along with kaolin clay. Saponified oils of pig tallow (lard), sunflower oil, olive oil, sustainably sourced palm kernel oil, beef tallow, coconut oil, shea butter, and castor oil.

So a few weeks ago I went through a soaping fail. I was making a mermaid soap for my daughter planned with blue, purple, and pink swirls. There was even going to be a swirl of glow in the dark. She was going to top it with some mermaid tails and shells she made out of soap dough. Everything was going as planned. I was using a soap base I used previously. I had the oils all blended and went to add the fragrance oil: Kisses and Dreams. I blended for 10 seconds and it became cement. I shoved the colors in and scooped up the batter and slammed it into the mold in hopes it will work together. So here it is the Mermaid Fail, still cool in the dark though! The bar has goat milk, Aloe vera, tussah silk along with kaolin clay. Saponified oils of pig tallow (lard), sunflower oil, olive oil, sustainably sourced palm kernel oil, beef tallow, coconut oil, shea butter, and castor oil.
