The land that is now Tanque Verde Ranch has been home to people for centuries. The Pima Indians settled near what is now the Cottonwood Grove in the 1600s, carving bedrock metates into the stone that can still be found in the earth today.

That history is why we seriously take the idea that this place belongs to something larger than any one chapter of its story. When guests walk these 640 acres, they're walking ground that has been significant to human beings for generations beyond counting.

In 1957, Brownie Cote purchased Tanque Verde Ranch. His son Bob took over management in 1969 and even after Bob and Rita Cote retired in 2009, their legacy lives on.

That continuity shows up in ways guests notice: the staff who've been here for decades, the horses who know the trails better than any GPS, the sense that people are living the ranch life.

When a corporate offsite includes ATV trails, a private concert, and guacamole made tableside - you know it's not your average conference day. We recently hosted a group for a full day of collaboration mixed with the kind of Western hospitality only the ranch can deliver: a morning panel, lunch and dinner at the barn, a performance by Native American dancers, fresh guacamole from our TVR chefs, and an afternoon out on the trails.

In 1868, Don Emilio Carrillo began ranching in the Tanque Verde Valley, a stretch of the Sonoran Desert that required Fort Lowell patrols just to keep the land safe. What he built wasn't just a cattle operation. It was a foothold in one of the most unforgiving and beautiful landscapes in the American West.

More than 155 years later, guests still ride the same land, under the same sky, surrounded by the same saguaros standing sentinel along the Rincon Mountains.

"What do I actually bring to a ranch?"

The answer is simpler than most people expect. You don't need to show up outfitted like you're heading into the backcountry, but a few things will make your stay better.

Boots with a heel are worth their weight in gold for riding (closed-toe athletic shoes work too). The Sonoran Desert sun is serious, so a wide-brim hat is non-negotiable in July. Layers for morning rides, because even summer desert mornings start cooler than you'd expect. Sunscreen, a reusable water bottle, and at least one outfit you don't mind getting dusty.
