Human noroviruses are major causes of acute gastroenteritis and murine noroviruses are often used in research to study the effects of therapeutic agents against these viruses. Clove, cinnamon bark, and thyme EOs each demonstrated antiviral activity against murine noroviruses, altering inflammatory cytokines to create an unfavorable environment for replication. The oils also disinfected stainless steel and low-density polyethylene surfaces at 0.5% and 1% concentrations, with greater activity observed when combined with EDTA. These findings highlight the potential to use these three oils to manage norovirus infections and disinfect surfaces contaminated by the viruses.
